Lego (trademarked in capitals as LEGO) is a line of plastic construction toys that are manufactured by The Lego Group, a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark. As of 2021, Lego was the largest toy company in the world. The company's flagship product, Lego, consists of variously coloured interlocking plastic bricks accompanying an array of gears, figurines called minifigures, and various other parts. Lego pieces can be assembled and connected in many ways to construct objects, including vehicles, buildings, and working robots. Anything constructed can be taken apart again, and the pieces reused to make new things.
The Lego Group began manufacturing the interlocking toy bricks in 1949. Movies, games, competitions and eight Legoland amusement parks have been developed under the brand. As of July 2015, 600 billion Lego parts had been produced. There have been many licensed games about Lego products, the first one, Lego Island, being released in 1997 only for PCs. However, most games have been released for Nintendo consoles, too, all of which can be seen below. By the 2010s, the Lego brand videogames were exclusively published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
Lego vs. Nintendo[]
In the late sixties, Nintendo developed blatant copies of Lego blocks called N&B Blocks which, while similar, were slightly unique in that many of the pieces were round instead of square. In commercials that Nintendo aired on television, they compared the two products. In one commercial, a child is building a rocket ship with what appears to be Lego pieces (the commercial never explains which brand), while another is building a rocket with N&B blocks. The N&B Block version ends up looking much better due to the circular pieces, whereas the Lego one is much more square. The kid that was building with the Lego pieces gets jealous, though his brother allows him to play with his, which excites him. Lego took Nintendo to court, claiming that it was wrong for Nintendo to compare the two products and that it was plagiarism. Ultimately, Lego lost the case and Nintendo continued to sell N&B blocks for a short while. In the end, however, Lego won since Nintendo's products were no where near the same quality, with the blocks often detaching from one another. After a short while Nintendo abandoned the brand, though made mention of it in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins in the form of a stage built entirely of N&B Blocks.
Nintendo Lego sets[]
Lego Super Mario[]
On March 12, 2020, Nintendo announced a collaboration with Lego. The collaboration is an interactive set of Legos that includes figures of several characters and enemies, including Mario, Goombas, and Yoshi. The Mario figure includes LEDs and can interact with other Lego Super Mario pieces. For example, if it touches a lava block, it will react by displaying fire on the LED screen and turning Mario's eyes into Xs. The first set released in 2020 with a Luigi set in 2021.
Lego Nintendo Entertainment System[]
On July 14, 2020, Lego revealed the Lego NES was released in the end of 2020. The set includes the NES, the controller, a Super Mario Bros. cartridge and a retro TV featuring a scene from Super Mario Bros. The level can be moved with a crank towards the back with the Mario able to move independent along the screen. The cartridge can be placed in the slot like the original. If the Mario from Lego Super Mario is attached to the top of the TV, it will make the sounds from the original.
Lego Super Mario 64 Question Mark Block[]
In late 2021, Lego released this set. The default look is like a regular Question Block from the Mario series but, it can fold out into a set of Super Mario 64 levels. Unlike the other Super Mario sets, Mario is represented by a set of blocks in his color scheme. The 4 levels featured are Princess Peach's Castle Grounds, Bob-omb Battlefield, Cool, Cool Mountain and Lethal Lava Land.
Lego Animal Crossing[]
In October 2023, it was announced that a series of Lego sets based on the Animal Crossing series would be released in March 2024. The first series of set announced was Julian's Birthday Party, Bunnie's Outdoor Activities, Kapp'n's Island Boat Tour, Isabelle's House Visit, and Nook's Cranny and Rosie's House.
Lego The Legend of Zelda[]
On May 2024, it was announced that a series of Lego sets based on The Legend of Zelda series would be released, with the first announced Lego set being a two-in-one set featuring the Great Deku Tree that can be customized into either his The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time depiction or his The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild depiction.
