Kefka Palazzo (ケフカ・パラッツォ, Kefuka Parattso, spelled as Cefca Palazzo in the Japanese version) is the main antagonist of Final Fantasy VI for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. During the first half of the game, he acts as the court mage of Emperor Gestahl, but later betrays him and claims the power for himself.

Biography[]

Kefka was one of Cid's first Magitek knights. But the process wasn't perfected yet. The resulting infusion drove him insane. Before the start of the game, Kefka uses the Slave Crown put on Terra to order her to fry fifty Imperial soldiers alive in 3 minutes. Kefka is briefly visible in the opening cutscene, being the first major character seen in the game.

The first time the party meets Kefka is in Figaro Castle, where he is looking for Terra. After setting the castle alight, the party escapes after Figaro Castle submerges underground. But the time that Kefka crossed the Moral Event Horizon was when he poisoned the water supply of Doma, killing every NPC inside including Cyan's wife Elayne and son Owain.

Kefka then leads the Empire in an unsuccessful attempt to invade Narshe to capture the frozen Esper Tritoch, being defeated by the party and fleeing back to Vector.

After killing General Leo and acquiring lots of Magicite, Kefka and Gestahl raise the Floating Continent into the air. It is here where Kefka disturbs the balance of the Statues and becomes God of Magic.

In-game[]

Kefka actually has party member stats that are used when the player fights him in the Imperial Camp and the Cave to the Sealed Gate. Another party member version of Kefka is used when he fights a palette swap of Ifrit in Thamasa.

Reception[]

Kefka won the Nintendo Power Award for Worst Villain. Kefka is considered to be the most beloved villain of the Final Fantasy franchise, and one of the most highly regarded Pure Evil villains in all of fiction.
