An Unseen Servant
Euden: It's the strangest thing...
Euden: Lately, I just haven't been able to shake the feeling I'm being watch—
Jurota: I am Jurota, your humble servant. It is a pleasure to meet you.
Euden: Waugh! Wh-when did...?! HOW did...?!
Jurota: I have traveled here to the Halidom to beg a boon of you.
Euden: Well, you might have just walked up and asked me normally.
Ranzal: Euden! Get away from him!
Ranzal: Guys what hide in the shadows and pop up behind ya ain't ever good news!
Ranzal: He could be one'a the Empire's assassins!
Jurota: You mistake my intentions, sir.
Jurota: If my presence was hidden, it is purely out of habit. For you see, I am a shinobi.
Jurota: I have no intention whatsoever of harming Master Euden.
Ranzal: Nice story. Still don't trust ya.
Ranzal: Now step away from him, unless ya wanna do this the hard wa...
Ranzal: Uh, where's my axe?
Jurota: You are looking for this?
Ranzal: You little... When did you—
Jurota: I did not come here to fight, sir.
Euden: You mentioned a request, right? Let's hear it.
Jurota: I ask that you accept your humble servant Jurota into your service, master.
Ranzal: You can't possibly trust this guy, Euden.
Ranzal: Everything about him is suspicious. AND he's a damn axe thief!
Euden: If you're as skilled as you seem, I'd be happy to hire you on.
Ranzal: AXE THIEF!
Ranzal: Ya can't just go hirin' on random strangers without knowin' the first thing about 'em!
Euden: That's a fair point. ...Loud, but fair.
Euden: Why do you want to serve me, Jurota?
Jurota: I cannot say, my lord.
Euden: Well, I'm sure you have your reasons.
Ranzal: Are ya really gonna accept that bullplop excuse of an answer?!
Euden: Your concern is heard and appreciated, Ranzal.
Euden: But he seems truthful to me.
Jurota: All that I can say is that a man in my master's position faces constant threat from countless assassins.
Jurota: I have come here to stand between them and you—to serve as blade and shield.
Ranzal: Wha... He's gone!
Jurota: Even unseen, know that your humble servant is at your side always.
Jurota: If you have need of me, only speak.
Euden: Thanks, Jurota. And welcome aboard.
Ranzal: We really gonna trust this guy? REALLY?
Episode 2
For Revenge
Ranzal: Woof! Today's battle was somethin'...
Euden: Everyone be sure to get some good rest once we're back home.
Assassin: You will never see your home again, Euden.
Euden: What? Who are you?
Assassin: The dead have no need of names.
Assassin: Now DIE!
Jurota: You will not touch him.
Assassin: Grngh?! D-damn you...
Jurota: Are you unharmed, master?
Euden: I am...thanks to you, Jurota.
Jurota: This pleases me greatly. It would not do to lose you.
Jurota: Now...
Jurota: I avoided any of the major organs. You should be alive for a while yet.
Assassin: Ngh-GAH! Curse you...Jurota!
Jurota: Yours will not be an easy death...
Jurota: And you will know my fury in every moment of it!
Euden: Jurota, stop that at once! We do not torture people!
Jurota: I am afraid this is one order I cannot heed, master.
Jurota: I have long awaited the chance at revenge upon my enemies; I'll not let it slip by.
Euden: Revenge?
Assassin: Then you still harbor a grudge...
Jurota: Of course.
Jurota: It is one I'll not forget until I've exacted revenge upon every last one of those who betrayed me.
Assassin: ......
Euden: What grudge is he talking about, Jurota?
Jurota: ...I was betrayed by those who served the same master as I.
Jurota: The selfsame master who presently plots to see your life ended.
Jurota: That is why your humble servant entered into your service...
Jurota: So that I might greet each of my former brethren with a blade.
Euden: Then this is all about revenge?
Euden: So when you said you'd come to protect me, that was a lie?
Jurota: I spoke no lie, master.
Jurota: I have every intention of cutting down all who would threaten your life.
Euden: ......
Jurota: I have told you the truth entire, master.
Jurota: Should you wish me gone, you need only say the word, and I shall obey.
Jurota: I will find another means by which to gain my vengeance.
Episode 3
The Betrayed Retainer
Euden: Who goes there?!
Assassin: You are a fool, Euden.
Assassin: Knowing full well you're a hunted man, you still walk about unaccompanied?
Assassin: You may curse your own poor judgment in the afterlife! Now di—
Jurota: The only fool here is you.
Jurota: What assassin fails to realize there is an enemy standing right behind them?
Assassin: J-Jurota?! Stop! Stay away from me!
Jurota: Then you are aware of what fate awaits would-be killers who cross my path.
Assassin: N-no, Jurota! l apologize for what we did to you! It was wrong! WE were wrong!
Assassin: Please...
Jurota: Yours will not be an easy death. First, I will remove your—
Euden: ENOUGH, Jurota!
Euden: I've told you before that I will not abide needless cruelty!
Jurota: ...Well, I suppose the sort of assassin who would grovel for forgiveness is poor fodder for my vengeance.
Jurota: Begone from my sight! Slither back to your hideaway and relay a message to those who betrayed me...
Jurota: Tell them that the next time they come, they must bring everyone.
Jurota: That way I may sate my thirst for revenge with the lot of you.
Jurota: Now, GO! Before my patience wanes.
Assassin: Eaaaagh!
Euden: Er... Thank you. For letting him go.
Euden: And for protecting me.
Jurota: I require no thanks.
Jurota: I let him live this day. On the next, he will find no such mercy.
Euden: Why are you so focused on revenge?
Euden: If you don't wish to tell me, I won't press the matter...
Euden: But I want to know more about you— as an ally AND a friend.
Jurota: You would name me friend even knowing you are being used as a tool for my retribution?
Jurota: ...Very well. It is a grim tale, but I will tell it all the same.
Jurota: Before I entered your service, I was a shinobi loyal in body, mind, and spirit to another master.
Jurota: No matter the challenge, I performed any task I was given to prove my faithfulness.
Jurota: But my success bred jealousy among my peers—and in the end, they betrayed me.
Jurota: They told our master that I plotted against him in secret.
Jurota: ...He believed them.
Euden: Even after all that you'd done?
Jurota: He cast me out without hesitation. Long years of faithful work did not stay his hand so much as a moment.
Jurota: I lost everything. My place in the world... My sense of loyalty...
Jurota: Hate was all that remained.
Jurota: And vengeance is my only road to walk. I see no meaning in continuing to live, save in meting out justice to those responsible.
Euden: Thank you for telling me that.
Euden: Our circumstances are similar in some ways.
Euden: I, too, was stripped of my rightful place, and had that which I held most precious stolen from me.
Jurota: You've endured this loss as well, master?
Jurota: I see...
Jurota: Truly, it is a strange connection we share.
Episode 4
A Futile Notion
Jurota: ...We are not alone.
Jurota: Stop where you are, master.
Jurota: One step farther means death.
Assassin: ...You're still sharp as ever, Jurota.
Euden: An assassin? No, more... We're surrounded!
Assassin: We have all come, Jurota. Just as you requested.
Assassin: Even you cannot hope to stop this many blades at once.
Jurota: ...Heh.
Assassin: Do we amuse you?
Jurota: I have waited for this moment for so very long, my former brothers.
Jurota: At last, every viper who betrayed me is within reach—and ready to receive the cold vengeance he is due!
Euden: Jurota, wait!
Euden: They're too many for us to handle alone. We need to call for the others and—
Jurota: NO!
Jurota: This is my fight. I will not share it, nor will I be stopped!
Euden: No, Jurota. You'll— Rrrgh?!
Assassin: You don't have the leisure of worrying about others. Your life ends here as well!
Jurota: Nnrgh... *pant* *cough*
Assassin: *huff* *heave*
Assassin: I'm the last one standing...? Your skill with a blade always was the stuff of nightmares.
Assassin: But even you can't move in that state... You're dead on your feet!
Jurota: If my arms and legs won't heed me... I will open your throat with my teeth!
Jurota: If my life is...the price of vengeance... I pay it gladly!
Assassin: Then you die a failure!
Euden: NO!
Assassin: Rgh, Euden!
Jurota: Wait! Coward!
Euden: Jurota! Are you all right?!
Jurota: Euden... You didn't need to do that.
Jurota: I brought this situation upon myself.
Jurota: I have no right to ask that any intervene on my behalf...
Euden: A man needs no reason to save a life.
Euden: Least of all a friend's.
Jurota: You are far too sentimental.
Jurota: But you HAVE saved my life, and for this, I thank you.
Euden: No thanks needed. I did it for my own selfish reasons.
Jurota: You are truly a curious fellow, master.
Jurota: Had I served you from the start, perhaps...
Jurota: No. A futile notion, now. We had best return to the Halidom.
Episode 5
True Loyalty
Jurota: Sitting around the fire like this is a novel experience.
Euden: You've never made camp before?
Jurota: Lingering near an open flame announces one's position to all the world.
Jurota: My kind waits ever in the shadows.
Euden: Fair enough. Then I suppose you've never tried...this?
Jurota: ...Bread scorched on the fire? No. I have not tried "this."
Euden: Most of us call it "toast," but yes.
Euden: Cleo made it.
Jurota: And you're certain it wasn't poisoned?
Euden: Poisoned? Cleo? ...Heh.
Euden: She's a bit strict at times, but there's no worry of poison. Enjoy!
Jurota: *munch* Mmm.
Euden: Good, eh?
Euden: Be sure to tell her. She'll appreciate it.
Jurota: My master still treats his humble servant as a comrade.
Euden: What do you mean, "still"? We've been comrades since you joined us, and that isn't changing.
Jurota: Master Euden? I have a request.
Euden: Oh? This is unusual.
Jurota: Will you allow me to enter your employ? To serve you with honor and faith?
Euden: Like I said, that's been the case since you first—
Jurota: No. Until now, I have remained at your side to further my pursuit of vengeance.
Jurota: That is not true loyalty.
Jurota: ...I have been as this flame.
Jurota: Animated by a singular hunger to consume my foes as that fire does wood.
Jurota: But the flame within me has cooled over the time I have served at your side.
Jurota: Though that may be in part due to your uncanny ability to jump in just as I prepare to finish my prey.
Euden: I guess I was less than subtle about that.
Jurota: It has allowed me to see truth.
Jurota: Vengeance is a hungry thing precisely because it is hollow. It births nothing and holds no meaning. It simply...consumes.
Jurota: So I wish to wield this blade now not for vengeance, but in the service of my new master.
Jurota: Not to kill, but to protect what is dear to me.
Euden: Jurota, you haven't been listening.
Jurota: I see... It was a request beyond what I deserve.
Euden: No! I've been saying this whole time that you're already part of this team!
Jurota: ...I am unworthy of this.
Euden: I'm grateful for your faithful aid, Jurota.
Jurota: It is your humble servant who is grateful.
Jurota: From this day on, I will serve you with mind, body, and soul!
