Euden: Hmm? Looks like someone's coming.
Ranzal: He's got a weapon. We better get ready in case he decides to cause trouble.
Cleo: By himself? You truly leap to conclusions far too hastily sometimes.
Ranzal: Well, I ain't about to stand here and wait for some chump to split my skull. I'm gonna go see what he wants.
Euden: I'll come with you. Hopefully this is all just some misunderstanding on our part.
Jakob: ......
Ranzal: Hey! That's far enough!
Jakob: ......
Ranzal: It takes guts to take us on solo, but it also shows a lack'a brains! This here's as far as ya go, pal.
Jakob: ......
Ranzal: Quiet type, eh? Fine by me. I'll let my fists do the talkin'!
Euden: Wait. He's trying to tell us something.
Ranzal: Then he ain't doin' a good job of it!
Jakob: ...Let me join you. I promise to be of use!
Ranzal: Oh, for the love'a clams... Why didn't ya just say so?! Looks like I was leapin' to conclusions just like Cleo said. Sorry 'bout that.
Jakob: ......
Ranzal: We back to the silent thing now? Geez, talk about aloof.
Euden: Well, he doesn't look like a bad person, and he DID come here to join us, so... You there. If you want to join us, you're more than welcome.
Ranzal: C'mon, eat up! This here's yer welcome party, after all!
Cleo: And to think you were ready to decry him as our enemy after one look earlier.
Jakob: E-excuse me!
Cleo: Are you talking to me?
Jakob: Do...you not remember me?
Cleo: Now that I think about it, I believe I may have seen you before? ...But perhaps not.
Jakob: I see. I...suppose you wouldn't...
Euden: Did you come here because you wanted something from Cleo, Jakob?
Jakob: Ah!
Cleo: What was THAT about? He just ran off!
Ranzal: I think we're gonna have to get to know him better before he starts openin' up. Which means I gotta sit him down and yammer away until the sun comes up!
Cleo: Please refrain from forcing that poor man to stay up all night.
Episode 2
Silent Safeguard
Euden: Getting rid of these fiends wouldn't be so hard if the trees weren't so dense... They could be hiding anywhere. Is everyone okay?!
Cleo: I am fi—
Euden: Cleo, behind you! What the...?
Cleo: What is it, Euden?
Euden: There was a fiend there, and then it was just...gone!
Cleo: I am not certain I understand.
Euden: Maybe I'm seeing things. Cleo, watch out!
Jakob: ......
Euden: Whoa! One hit... Is that what happened to the other one?
Jakob: ......
Cleo: You keep acting as if I am in danger, but there is never anything there. This is neither the time nor place to play games, Euden.
Euden: But I'm not... Well, in any case, I think Jakob will be all right taking care of this area.
Cleo: What are you talking about?
Jakob: ......
Euden: Looks like there aren't any more fiends. I'm glad everyone's safe.
Cleo: ......
Euden: What is it, Cleo?
Cleo: I was merely thinking about how smoothly today's battles went. No fiends ever came near me, so I was able to focus on healing.
Euden: Um, about that... There was actually someone watching over you and destroying any fiends that came your way.
Jakob: !
Cleo: I did not even notice.
Jakob: Ah!
Euden: Jakob? Hey, I was just talking about... Wait, don't go!
Cleo: What is going on? What happened?
Euden: ...Nothing. It's nothing.
Cleo: Then we should hasten to the castle. Night is falling fast.
Euden: I can't believe he would help Cleo and then leave without speaking. Jakob really is a man of few words...
Episode 3
A Past Kindness
Jakob: *sigh*
Euden: What's wrong, Jakob? You keep sighing.
Jakob: ......
Euden: Is something troubling you?
Jakob: W-well...
Euden: You can confide in me. I won't tell anyone.
Jakob: It's...about Cleo.
Euden: How so?
Jakob: ......
Euden: Hmm. You did seem familiar with Cleo when you arrived. How do you know her?
Jakob: Well...
<Chief Mercenary: Come on, Jakob! Pick up the pace! Hurry up with them bags! Is this any way to thank the guy what raised ya after your parents died? You owe me, so quit draggin' your feet!
Jakob: ...Okay.
Chief Mercenary: And prep your gear! We're shorthanded, so you're gonna be fightin' with us! Ain't like anyone would miss ya if ya fell in battle! Bwa ha ha! ...Well? Say somethin'!
Jakob: ......
Chief Mercenary: Ya better do what you're told!
Jakob: I was made to fight against my will, and before I knew it, the others in my company were dead. I was heavily wounded, and certain my short life had reached its end.
Jakob: Am I...the only one left? I think I'm done for... Damn... Is this really how it ends?
Cleo: Are you all right? Goodness! You are heavily wounded. Stand still while I heal you.
Jakob: Ah!
Jakob: I was on the verge of death, and she saved me. If not for her, I'd be gone. So I...I want to thank her. And also to tell her how I feel.
Euden: I can see the effort you're putting in... To repay the kindness that was done to you. And I'm certain if you keep trying, Cleo will see that as well.
Jakob: Th-thank you! I will keep trying!
Episode 4
Bout of Courage
Ranzal: What'd ya wanna see me for, Jakob?
Jakob: ...Spar with me.
Ranzal: Hold the carrier pigeon. We ain't had three words together, and now ya wanna SPAR?
Jakob: As a mercenary, I respect you. You're strong. I want to defeat you and prove my own strength.
Ranzal: Bwa ha ha! Well, ya sure as hell LOOK determined—I'll give ya that. All right. Come on, then. But I ain't gonna hold back!
Cleo: Euden! Come quickly! Ranzal and Jakob are fighting!
Euden: What?!
Ranzal: Hyaaah!
Jakob: ......
Ranzal: I'm surprised you handled that. Yer really somethin'!
Jakob: I am going to...surpass you!
Cleo: You have to stop them!
Euden: Hang on. They don't look angry. I think Jakob has a reason for wanting to do this. Let's wait and see what happens.
Cleo: But what if they hurt each other? I won't stand by and watch this! That's enough, both of you!
Ranzal: Bwaaaa ha ha! Yer good, pal! REAL good! I ain't had that much fun in a dog's year!
Jakob: *pant* *pant*
Ranzal: Guess we gotta call this one a draw. Heh. Yer all right in my book, Jakob. Today settles it... We're pals!
Cleo: And just what sort of best friends beat each other to a pulp?! What has gotten INTO you two?
Ranzal: Easy, Cleo. We're just havin' us a friendly little sparri—
Cleo: I see nothing friendly about the injuries you have inflicted on one another! Now be quiet and let me heal you. ...Honestly, sometimes I do not know WHY I put up with these antics.
Euden: Well fought, Jakob. I know you're tired, but I was hoping you'd tell me one thing... Why did you challenge Ranzal?
Jakob: I had a realization when talking to you the other day, Euden. I respect Ranzal. So if I could defeat him, I was sure everything would go well. And I was certain Cleo would understand how I feel. But our fight ended in a draw—AND I caused trouble for Ranzal as well. I'll have to buy him a meal later. It seems I've a long way to go as a man.
Euden: Heh. You don't do anything by half-measures, do you? But look, if you're brave enough to challenge Ranzal, you're going to be just fine in whatever you decide to do. I hope Cleo realizes how you feel soon.
Cleo: Jakob?! What are you doing?! Come here at once and let me heal you!
Jakob: Y-yes, Cleo! Coming!
Episode 5
What the Heart Wills
Ranzal: Come on, eat up! A toast to our friendship!
Jakob: Th-thank you.
Ranzal: Best pals don't need to hold nothin' back 'round each other, yeah?!
Cleo: Honestly, you are going to drive Jakob away with that level of boisterousness.
Ranzal: Eh, he's havin' the time of his life. Ain't that right, pal?!
Cleo: You do not have to pretend just to make him happy, Jakob. Trying to keep up with Ranzal is detrimental to one's health.
Jakob: I'm...fine. But thanks for your concern.
Cleo: Honestly, do not force yourself. By the way, Jakob... I remembered. I healed you before, have I not?
Jakob: Ah! Cleo! I...um... Th-thank you for what you did! Y-you're right. You DID heal me, and I've wanted to thank you ever since. I owe my life to you.
Cleo: You make too much of this. Still, what a strange coincidence. I never thought to see you again after that day, let alone fight by your side. At first, I took your silence to mean you were standoffish. But now I think I have come to understand you better. You may not speak much, but you are a truly kind person.
Jakob: C-Cleo! I... I've always lo—
Ranzal: Hey, what's wrong? Why'd ya stop eatin'?! Ain't no fun if I'm the only one stuffin' my face! Bwaaa ha ha ha!
Cleo: Do calm yourself, Ranzal. You are an adult, and quite capable of eating without another's company. Now stop bothering Jakob! ...I am sorry about that. What was it you were saying?
Jakob: It's...nothing.
Cleo: Oh?
Jakob: It's...just good to be able to fight alongside you.
Cleo: Well, I feel the same way.
