Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is a game for the Nintendo Switch. It's a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with the gameplay of Hyrule Warriors. It takes place during the period 100 years before Breath of the Wild when Link and Princess Zelda are gathering allies, particularly the Four Champions, across Hyrule to stop Calamity Ganon, who intends to revive himself and destroy the kingdom, along with combating his forces.

Plot[]

Prologue[]

Terrako escapes

Terrako travels to the past

At the same time Princess Zelda's power had awakened to protect her appointed knight, Link; it caused a mysterious Diminutive Guardian named Terrako to roll out of a box in Zelda's Study where it witnesses the destruction around them and hears Zelda's desperation to protect everyone. Taking her words into consideration, it creates a Gate of Time to go back to the time where the Calamity has yet to happen. However, it's intentions did not go unnoticed by a corrupted Guardian who attempts to attack it, but Terrako narrowly avoids the laser as it enters the Gate of Time. Unbeknownst to it, some of Ganon's Malice pursues it through the Gate.

Chapter 1[]

Terrako arrives in the past where Hyrule is currently in its peaceful state yet preparing for the day that Calamity Ganon returned. In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Terrako smacks into the head of a Bokoblin upon emerging from the portal and wanders off to find Princess Zelda, while the Malice that pursued it also arrived and after a brief minute to figure out where the past version of Terrako is located it heads to it finds the box in Zelda's Study to corrupt it, thus becoming Harbinger Ganon. With the knowledge of the bleak future that would be brought about, Harbinger quickly sets off to pursue Terrako to prevent it from trying to change that future and having any form of contact with Link, Zelda, or Impa and it managed to find Terrako entering the coliseum and confronts it there. Terrako managed to beat it down and thought it was victorious when Harbinger collapsed and deactivated. However, Harbinger wakes up and transforms into Mutated Ganon and single-handedly sends Terrako sliding across the room, defeating it with it buried in the rubble. Content with Terrako being buried and believing that it has truly stopped Terrako from fulfiling its mission, Mutated Ganon reverts into its Harbinger Ganon form and sets off to make sure that the dark future never changes.

Terrako had remained inactive until two Bokoblins arrived at the coliseum searching for loot. They find Terrako and tie it to one of their bone weapons, the Bokoblins leave the coliseum to return to their main unit. King Rhoam orders his troops, with one of them being Link to take down the monsters in Hyrule Field. The Bokoblins witness Link fighting their fellow comrades, and they flee in terror at the sight, which sends Terrako flying, and it lands against a rock. During the battle, Link discovers Terrako in its inactive state leaning against a rock and witnesses Impa being chased by Bokoblins. As she calls for Link's help, she trips and tosses a Sheikah Slate that was in her hands in Link's direction. As the Hylian knight runs to catch it, the Sheikah Slate activates in midair and the dormant Terrako is also brought to life and summons a Sheikah Tower in the process. The Bokoblins that were pursuing Impa then flee for their lives and both her Link and Impa were shocked by the presence of Terrako and the Sheikah Tower. Once the battle passes, they pursue Terrako as it heads to the castle where Princess Zelda emerged from the door and Link managed to catch Terrako before it got close to the princess and holds it high. Impa shows her the Sheikah Slate and deduces that Terrako is somehow linked to the Sheikah Slate as both were activated when they were present.

Terrako meets the group

Terrako meeting the group.

After letting her father know about it, he permits Zelda to take Terrako to Purah and Robbie to have them analyze it and reminds Zelda that she shouldn't let research get in the way of her duties and she is still on a pilgrimage to access her dormant sealing magic that she had been seeking for a full decade. During their expedition through the Breach of Demise, they are suddenly attacked by a corrupted Guardian Stalker, infected by Ganon's Malice and tried to kill Princess Zelda only for Link to block it. The Princess advises against engaging it and the Hylian Soldiers hold it off. Meanwhile, Terrako activates a nearby Decayed Guardian, using it to weaken the Guardian Stalker until Link managed to destroy it. Worried about these recent events, the party continues towards the Science Academy, unaware that another Diminutive Guardian silently watches them from afar before walking away to wreak havoc on several of Hyrule's inhabitants.

At the laboratory, Purah and Robbie managed to extract pieces from Terrako's memory banks and reveals the true horror that the Great Calamity would bring if left unchecked. As it came from the dismal future, it was an ominous warning on what is to come, and they must prepare immediately. Despite being disturbed by what she saw, Princess Zelda swears that she will do what she can to ensure that these horrific events do not come to be.

At the same time, Harbinger Ganon meets a mysterious cloaked man named Astor who happens to be fortune teller and a member of the cult that worships Calamity Ganon as a god of death that will bring about Hyrule's fall. It shares the vision of Calamity Ganon bringing forth an apocalyptic disaster that it will bring with him which impresses the cloaked man. The Guardian of Remembrance DLC shows that he brought it to his fellow members of the cult where they conduct a demonic ritual as Harbinger Ganon gave revealed its vision to them, only to use its Malice to kill each of the cultists. One of them desperately begs Astor to stop the ritual, though he ignores his pleas as the distressed cultist also falls to the ground dead. With Astor as the only survivor, he believes that he is chosen as Ganon's dark prophet as he leaves with a laugh. He would ally himself with the Yiga Clan to ensure the events presented to him came to be. He sets off not only to revive Ganon, but to dispose of anyone who poses a threat to Ganon's imminent return as the prophesy had foretold.

Chapter 2[]

Now that they know of the true nature of the Calamity's imminent arrival, they set out to recruit elite warriors from different tribes who will pilot the four Divine Beasts that were excavated earlier of four. They would later become the Champions of Hyrule.

AoC Zelda and Mipha

Zelda and Mipha look into the Sheikah Slate.

As they arrive in Zora's Domain, Princess Zelda meets with King Dorephan to inquire of his daughter, the Crown Princess of the Zoras, Mipha to become the Champion of Divine Beast Vah Ruta. The Zora King politely turns her down as he could not bear to put his daughter in danger. Zelda tries to convince him otherwise, but their meeting is soon interrupted with reports of an invasion. Meanwhile, Link and Mipha meet again for the first time in ages and briefly meets Terrako, noting how cute it was. It was then that a Zora guard notifies Mipha about the attack and her father is leading the defensive troops. When he notes that her brother Prince Sidon was with her when he really wasn't. Concerned, Mipha and the rest of the group assist her father's forces along the way and learns from one of the Zora Captains that Sidon is left unattended, with the Zora Princess figuring that he went out to the only area where it was strictly off-limits: Ploymus Rock where a dreaded Red-Maned Lynel that wields Shock Arrows, the very element that is known for being fatal to her tribe, resides. Sidon is seen pointing a spear at it and Mipha and the group managed to fend it off. She then reunites with Sidon for a moment, lightly scolding him for wandering off without adult supervision, but praises him for his courage. It was short-lived when enemy reinforcements appear and charge for the domain. Terrako points out the Sheikah Slate to the Hylian Princess and an image of Divine Beast Vah Ruta appears. Realizing what it meant after initial confusion, Mipha boards Vah Ruta and unleashes a powerful laser on an Electric Moblin that was about to kill her father, which frightened the monsters away. Unwilling to let them escape, Mipha pursues them upon Ruta and managed to eliminate the whole army in one fell swoop. Having seen what they are up against and what it would bring, King Dorephan allows Mipha to become the Zora Champion, on the condition that she returns home safely.

Daruk's meeting

Link, Zelda, and Impa meeting with Daruk.

Link, Zelda, and Impa head to Goron City on Death Mountain to speak to the Goron Stalwart Daruk about him piloting Divine Beast Vah Rudania, he is more than happy to help out his allies, though he explains the dilemma that the Divine Beast in question is in a difficult spot which is in Death Mountain's crator and would require them to climb it. He then rallies them to climb up the mountain to reach it; they also see that Ganon's monsters have invaded the Southern Goron Mines and disrupting their work and were attempting to hinder their progress, but they managed to fight their way through them and reach the summit where Daruk takes it on an official test run by obliterating the vast numbers of monsters invading the mines. Despite initially struggling to figure out how it works, Daruk manages to adapt and pushes through. After that, Daruk happily accepts her proposition on him being the Goron Champion who pilots Rudania. Believing that Link must have been starving after all the excitement that happened, he gives him a Prime Rock Roast for him to dig in. As Link bites into it, Impa and Zelda watch in shock as Daruk apologizes for forgetting to provide some for them and promises he'll remember to bring some to them next time, which Zelda accepts with some uneasiness.

Link and Revali fighting

Link and Revali in a duel.

As Link, Impa, and Terrako travel to Rito Village during a blizzard to find a warrior who will pilot Divine Beast Vah Medoh, some Rito warriors saw them and fly off to report to their commander, Revali who urges them to take action. Revali declares Rito Village his home and refuses to let them come any closer. The group were suddenly attacked by the Rito, who believed that they were invaders and were forced to fight back as well as Ganon's monsters. When the bridge to the village was destroyed by a Rito Captain, they had no choice but to take another route and when they do arrive at the village, they are confronted by Revali. During the duel, Revali managed to disarm Link of his shield with a kick of his talons and creates a smokescreen to surprise him by going for the kill from behind. Just before Revali can shoot Link in the back at point-blank range, Princess Zelda arrives in her winter attire and pleads for them to stop their battle and Link managed to deflect the arrow on time. After everyone calms down, Revali explains his actions that Rito Village had been repeatedly attacked by monsters led by another Guardian similar to Terrako, while he and his countrymen barely managed to fend them off and have since then become more paranoid of further attacks since then. As the princess was relieved that neither Link nor Revali were hurt, Impa is troubled by the thought of another Guardian similar to Terrako, and the princess states that they must come up with a strategy. Revali joins in on the conversation and accepts her proposition on him becoming the Rito Champion of Divine Beast Vah Medoh and is honored to do so, but he is clearly uneasy about Link, asking if the so-called "pathetic knight" is even worthy of wielding the legendary Master Sword. Terrako startles everyone by declaring itself a knight to the princess as well, much to Revali's chagrin and disbelief.

Urbosa and the party

Urbosa and the heroes ready to take on the Yiga Clan.

The group then heads to Gerudo Town to inquire of Urbosa to pilot Divine Beast Vah Naboris, who is a good friend of the late Queen of Hyrule. However, the Gerudo have been acting hostile with them and forcing them to hide leaving Zelda to wonder what was going on with them lately. They fight their way through the Gerudo vai soldiers into Gerudo Town and enter the throne room where "Urbosa" awaited them, and the princess asked her what was happening before they were cornered by the Chieftain's honor guards as "Urbosa" prepares to strike down Zelda and her allies. However, she is suddenly struck by lightning and collapsed and another Urbosa arrived at the scene. As everyone is surprised by the existence of two Urbosas, the one that saved the princess addressed the latter as "Little Bird", establishing that she is the real Urbosa while the other one called her "Princess Zelda" and showed herself to be a fake when it is revealed that it was Master Kohga who managed to manipulate the Gerudo against them and he summons the Yiga Clan soldiers to deal with them while he flees. The group managed to throw them out of the town and managed to get the attention of a Molduga in the heart of the desert in order to scare them off. Master Kohga was then forced to deal with them at the main camp and was defeated, and as they managed to get the Yiga Clan leader cornered, his second in-command Sooga arrives to take him out of the area. After this, Urbosa explains a brief history of the Yiga Clan who happen to be Sheikah traitors long ago who sided with Calamity Ganon and sought to resurrect him. She accepts her call to pilot Divine Beast Vah Naboris for this reason and out of loyalty to Princess Zelda, who was friends with her mother, who had passed ten years ago and offers to help her in any way she can.

Meanwhile, Sooga and Master Kohga meet with Astor, who was disappointed in them for their recent failure as he turns to his harbinger of Ganon, who is revealed to be the same guardian that Revali had been talking about that led the attacks on his village and provides the figure a vision of Hyrule's dark future with Ganon looming over Hyrule Castle. He states that this fate must be certain and that he will never let anyone, or anything alter its course.

Princess Zelda had continued to train to access her sealing power, but she is flustered that despite all this, it still did not bear any fruit. It didn't help that King Rhoam is flustered about her preferring science and technology over her spiritual training. On the way to Gatepost Town, Mipha and Daruk start a conversation regarding training and add to the subject about a potential knight being chosen by the darkness sealing sword, when the group are suddenly ambushed by Yiga Footsoldiers led by Sooga, who intends on assassinating the Princess of Hyrule. Link takes Zelda and retreat into the building while the Champions deal with the Yiga Clan and managed to take down their stronghold. However, it turned out to be a diversion as Sooga starts a fire to force Link and the Princess into the open. As Link fights the second in-command, Sooga tosses three kunai at Zelda and Terrako jumps in front of them but is shoved aside by Link, who blocks them with his shield. Seeing whom he's up against, Sooga orders the Yiga Clan to take their leave. Terrako is clearly upset at Link for taking the glory of saving the princess from it as Mipha and Daruk chuckle in amusement at the scene once they caught up to them.

Chapter 3[]

Revali with his bow

Revali before summoning Vah Medoh.

With the Champions now assembled, King Rhoam sends them to Korok Forest where the Master Sword rested, to find a knight would be chosen by this blade. Because the forest was infested with monsters, Revali steps in to deal with it, though he's honored to be chosen for such an important role, he takes his frustrations out on Link and questions his leadership. Daruk reminds him that they don't care who's the leader and they're facing the challenges ahead of them, though Revali dismisses this by saying that his Divine Beast is the key to victory and further insults Link by dubbing him the "fallen knight" before Urbosa intervenes by sternly asking how long expects him to deal with his gloating. Revali eventually does and summons Divine Beast Vah Medoh and boards it to destroy all of the monsters in the vicinity before flying down letting them know that it's safe to proceed as he rejoins them. Meanwhile, the mysterious seer Astor is in the forest depths with two Yiga Footsoldiers as he becomes aware that the Champions have arrived.

Walking in the Korok Forest

The Champions in the forest

As the Champions stroll through the forest Mipha states how foggy the forest was, before Revali voices his frustration on their progress and possibly going in circles, Daruk remarks that he should fly up and scout the area, but the Rito snaps back at him that even up in the air he still won't see a thing and retorts if he ever thinks before he speaks. Urbosa assures them that getting lost isn't a concern, but the possibility of not detecting an ambush as Zelda states that they should prepare for the most unusual event before she spots a giant Korok trying throughout their argument to get their attention. The Korok is happy that someone finally saw him and introduces himself as Hestu. Daruk asks him to guide them to the clearing considering Hestu's knowledge of the routes, but Hestu is worried and hesitant due to the monsters that he couldn't get around. Revali suggests not carrying his maracas around to sneak by safely, but Urbosa advises Hestu not to mind him and offers to help take care of the monsters. Pleased to hear this, Hestu happily escorts them through the forest.

Astor Grin

Astor confronts Link and Princess Zelda.

During their expedition, they notice strange appearances of Malice blocking the way and the dark replicas of the Champion pilots called Hollows in the four corners of the forest depths. With each one defeated, some chunks of Malice will disappear and when all of them are bested, the path is cleared allowing Link and Zelda to proceed. They are soon ambushed by Astor, who recreates the Hollows to attack them. Link is overwhelmed and soon had his knight's sword broken and Astor tells the Hollows to assassinate the princess, but before they could, a bright light shines from the Master Sword to weaken them considerably and Link responds by pulling out the sword and engages in battle, this time easily dispelling them from existence leaving Astor no choice but the fight him, but the power from the sword is too much for him so he withdraws from the forest just as the Champion Pilots arrived. The Great Deku Tree awakens and tells them that they are prepared for the battle ahead of them and saw a distraught look on Zelda's face when she looks at the sword and her own hand, he tells her that her power will soon arrive. While Zelda agrees, it was out of doubt and starts to display clear signs of disorientation from that point on.

As they make their way back to Hyrule Castle, the Princess's anxiety gets the better of her as she stops. Terrako saw the distraught princess as it plays Zelda's Lullaby which she recognized the song as it played it for her as a child every night. She is soon interrupted by an army of monsters that surround Hyrule Castle and they managed to break their way through. The Princess once more saw how Link succeeded where she didn't which catches the attention of Urbosa, who tells her that Link is the same boy as he was before he gained the sword and they both are alike. She then reminds her of the Great Deku Tree's words that she shouldn't worry so much to ease her concerns, though only for now. As the Divine Beast pilots arrived at Hyrule Castle, they are dubbed official Champions and they begin wearing their blue cloths that had their respective Divine Beast emblems. After the ceremony they stick around outside to rest from the battles they've fought. As Impa mulls that they have everything to stop the Calamity, Terrako attempts to get in on the conversation, to the former's displeasure as she attempts to lecture it. Terrako swats her hand away whenever Impa brings it close to the little guardian with the Sheikah woman visibly becoming angrier to the point of chasing it. Mipha reminds Daruk about their discussion about him helping her train and Daruk happily accepts and almost let's slip about her intentions to fight with Link, who happens to be nearby and panics as he approaches her curiously. Revali is caught in the middle of the fight between Terrako and Impa and tells them to take their fight elsewhere, but when they didn't and continued to get into his space, Revali angrily flies off.

Chapter 4[]

With Purah's deep research on the Sheikah Towers, she realized that it's not the only tower, there are more that are stationed all around Hyrule and they are all linked to the control system and the Champions go out to activate the towers. Back in Hyrule Castle, King Rhoam is still frustrated by Zelda's apparent neglect of her training through her insistence on research, but when he was given a strange device that she and her mother had been studying, Rhoam relents and permits her to continue what she's doing while staying focused on what she's supposed to do. At the Yiga Clan Hideout, Master Kohga and Sooga express concern that the Sheikah Towers could potentially give away their location, but Astor silences them and lets them know that they will eventually play their parts. Harbinger Ganon is revealed to be a Diminutive Guardian similar to Terrako that was possessed by Calamity Ganon and intends to use its power to gain control of Hyrule, ending with a laugh. Sooga warns the seer that Calamity Ganon is not a being that can be controlled by mortals, but his words are left unheard.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, When the Hylian captain reports on an ominous monster that has just entered another coliseum, Terrako suspects that it was Harbinger Ganon and sets off to confront it. Terrako gets another chance to fight its darker counterpart in its mutated form, though it was quickly overpowered again, and the pieces of debris bury it again. Fortunately, Purah manages to catch sight of the events and tells Princess Zelda and her friends about it and she and Robbie suggests collecting energy sources to help activate the ancient furnaces that will help bring Terrako back to life. At the same time, Astor and various Malice-infused monsters have attempted to stop them from firing up the furnaces to revive Terrako, they managed to force them to retreat. With all the furnaces active, Purah and Impa were concerned for Terrako's safety, though Terrako reactivates and faces against it once more and was able to hold its own against Mutated Ganon and managed to defeat the evil Guardian by firing its own powerful laser into it, sending it flying and the Yiga Footsoldiers managed to catch it. Terrako approaches them with weapons in its metal claws, daring them to come at it, but the footsoldiers won't have any of it from the Guardian and vanish, leaving Terrako disappointed as it was just getting started. Soon after, Link and Princess Zelda managed to catch up to it, relieved to see that Terrako is okay and the little Guardian beeps and chirps to them, which amuses the duo.

Urbosa speaking to Purah

Purah explaining the Sheikah Tower's regional maps.

When Link activates the first Sheikah Tower, all of the hidden towers rise simultaneously. They managed to activate all except for one tower, which is at the Akkala Region which they journey there. They discover that the Yiga Clan had taken over what was believed to be the unbreachable Akkala Citadel; Sooga managed to get ahead of them by sending monsters to deal with them and created blockade after blockade to keep them from getting inside. Despite this, they managed to defend the furnaces there and managed to get into the citadel where they managed to defeat Sooga. With the Yiga Clan out of the way, they managed to activate the last tower and Akkala Citadel is safe for now. Purah further explains that the towers can display maps of its region on the Sheikah Slate and Urbosa quickly became interested and takes advantage of this knowledge to lead a preemptive attack on the Yiga Clan Hideout with Vah Naboris at her disposal to handle it when the time came. They soon followed up an assault on foot as they break in and defeated Sooga and Master Kohga once more.

Astor meets with Kohga and Sooga

Master Kohga and Sooga confronting Astor

Afterwards, Kohga and Sooga sit at the edge of the canyon when Astor arrived to meet with them. They get confrontational with him, wanting to know why he never told them about their impending failure. Astor calmly states that fate decides all, and all is going to plan more than they think and reminds them that they are bound to serve Calamity Ganon and if they harm his prophet, they will make an enemy out of the abomination, forcing both of them to back down from the intimidation. At the same time, Purah was able to hire more Sheikah scientists to help with the cause of countering Ganon and she showed Princess Zelda that the Sheikah Towers can be used for teleportation through a surprise demonstration. She continues to support the Science Academy, but she is still bothered by her not reaching her milestone: accessing her vital sacred power.

Through further research, her situation goes from bad to worse when Calamity Ganon's return is set to return on her seventeenth birthday, leaving King Rhoam worried as their time is a lot shorter than he thought. He has Zelda train at three Sacred Springs in hopes that it would bring her somewhere. Accompanied by Link and Impa, she starts training at the Spring of Courage though her prayers were very pessimistic and full of doubt and her ruminations are interrupted by a horde of monsters that besieged it. Both Link and Impa protect Princess Zelda during and after her training, even keeping them away from her when she stops to rest. With her knowledge of the ancient relics, the trio were able to escape safely. Her power did not awaken and Impa chides her for her lack of enthusiasm and attempts to cheer her up with a relatively bad attempt at humor. Zelda only felt better for a moment.

Chapter 5[]

As those over the age of seventeen are allowed to access Mt. Lanayru, Princess Zelda resolves to go there as soon as she came of age. Because they are aware that Calamity Ganon is expected to return on that day, King Rhoam had his people evacuate the area and stationed the soldiers at Akkala Citadel and Fort Hateno, important fortresses that can't afford to let them fall as this would bring disaster to the kingdom, and has the Divine Beasts deployed as they wait for Ganon to return. Robbie and Purah do more analyzation on Terrako's memories and managed to decrypt one of them and as they look into it, they are suddenly held at knifepoint by the "scientists" which turn out to be Yiga Clan members and the same is said for the authentic scientists. Purah tosses the Sheikah Slate and tells it to take it to Zelda immediately and Terrako barely managed to escape with it.

Hyrule Castle attacked

Calamity Ganon arrives.

As Link, Impa, and Zelda depart for Mt. Lanayru as planned, Terrako arrived, running frantically along the path and gives the slate to the princess. As she looks into it, Calamity Ganon suddenly appears and surrounds Hyrule Castle with its Malice much to her horror. Meanwhile Daruk returns to the Eldin Region to find a spot for Rudania when he hears a strange sound and is shocked to see Hyrule Castle plagued by an ominous mist. Mipha also witnesses this and similarly expresses surprise, Urbosa stoically states that they must have been taken by surprise, and Revali, initially calm, also took notice and also saw something wrong with the tower he's on until the ground shakes again, this time horrifying him as the Sheikah Towers in every region are shut down. As King Rhoam was trapped inside the Malice infested castle, Link, Impa, and Princess Zelda rush inside to try to save him and they saw that Ganon's Malice has corrupted several Guardians inside and they went berserk as a result and continue their search for the missing king. Eventually they were forced to flee the vicinity, and a laser fired in their direction. Link raises his shield as he steps in front of Zelda to deflect it, but King Rhoam arrived and managed to stun it with his Royal Claymore and order them to vacate the castle with the princess outright refusing and Link being hesitant to leave him, but the king reminds the latter of his duty to the princess. As Link takes the devastated Zelda out of the castle grounds, Rhoam silently entrusts his daughter's safety to Link as he is presumably killed by the Guardians. As they make it to Hyrule Field, they witness Ganon himself surrounding the castle; Impa shows Zelda the Sheikah Slate with the data that was decrypted, showing Ganon attacking the Divine Beasts. The princess breaks down over her perceived failure and beats herself up for her power still not coming. Terrako plays Zelda's Lullaby to comfort her, and her tears hit its screw, and it calls forth four Gates of Time which they make their way to each Divine Beast. They witness Vah Medoh's circuity still glowing blue indicating that Revali is still holding on for dear life but the trailing Malice on its wing is a sign that he is in danger and the same is said for the other Champions. Impa realized that there is still hope in saving the Champions and taking back the Divine Beasts, so they orchestrate a rescue operation to help spare them of their foretold deaths.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Link, Princess Zelda, and Impa having escaped the castle and took the route to the Lanayru Road - West Gate, completely unaware that King Rhoam and his Royal Guard have somehow managed to live on, is on the route to the Great Plateau and the Temple of Time. The Hyrulean army had already been deployed to aid them where the princess can train at the Spring of Wisdom as their journey had been interrupted earlier. Princess Zelda wasn't successful at unlocking her power, but she immediately turned her attention towards the endangered Champions.

Prince Sidon saves Mipha's life

Prince Sidon saving Mipha from Waterblight Ganon

Daruk finds himself battling Fireblight Ganon over Vah Rudania, trying to land a hit on it and using his barrier to block its attacks. The monster managed to land a hard hit that shattered his magical barrier, stunning him and it hurls a large fiery rock at him. Mipha is also fighting Waterblight Ganon over Vah Ruta and she was clearly shuddering from the cold as the water around her had frozen over and exhaustion from fighting it. The monster charges at her with a flail and Cryonic formations and tossed them at her. Before it was all over for the two Champions, the portals appear and an adult Sidon emerges from it to take down its ice-based projectiles before they could reach Mipha, refusing to lose her again much to the Zora Champion's surprise as he grins at her.

Yunobo saves Daruk's life

Yunobo arrives to save Daruk from Fireblight Ganon.

Yunobo comes out of another portal and uses Daruk's Protection to save Daruk from being crushed to death, to Daruk's shock at the sight of another Goron using his power but Yunobo assure him that he's there to help him win the battle. As Rudania is surrounded by lava flows, Zelda opts to save Mipha first so she can use Ruta to stop the heated flow. Despite Waterblight Ganon starting to gain an advantage over them, Sidon's support to his sister bought Link and the party enough time for them to arrive at the scene and managed to slay Waterblight Ganon. Mipha is too tired to join them and with no further danger inside the newly freed Vah Ruta, Sidon leaves her on her own to join the party to help Daruk by destroying the Igneo Talus that was causing the lava flows so Mipha can take advantage of Ruta's trunk to spray the lava to harden it. Yunobo starts to panic as Fireblight Ganon intimidates them until Daruk returns the favor by shielding him and tells him to remain calm and remember why he's here, bringing the young Goron back up. Yunobo's assistance to Daruk gave the team enough time to reach them and they managed to kill Fireblight Ganon. After that, Daruk takes the time to thank Link for backing him and gives Yunobo his gratitude for saving his life earlier. Mipha inquires of the adult Sidon if he really is her brother as she is only familiar with his younger self. He clarifies so, and he explains that he had been summoned to the future somehow. Daruk laughs it off as it doesn't make any sense to him, before putting up a serious face to ask Zelda about the events at Hyrule Castle. Once she explains the events, Daruk and Yunobo team up to take back Eastern Hyrule with Vah Rudania as they attack the Guardians and destroy the bridges to prevent them from crossing and taking down the enemy stronghold while protecting the stronghold of their allies. Daruk and Yunobo managed to secure the area.

Mipha and two Sidons

Mipha and her brother's counterparts.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Mipha and Sidon set off to assist the Zora army in protecting Goponga Village from the monsters that were invading it. Once the battle lightens up, Sidon takes command of the healthier soldiers as they are about to head out for their next task, while Mipha is healing the injuries of the ones who are hurt. She finds Sidon and the troops fighting more monsters and then an Electric Moblin slipping by them as it headed her way. Sidon's younger counterpart appeared and steps between his sister and the Moblin with a spear in hand. Panicking, Mipha pleads with Sidon to turn tail as it looms over them, before the adult Sidon slays the beast just in time before checking on his younger counterpart. Mipha is relieved to see that they are both okay and wonders what her little brother is doing. The older Sidon believes that it wanted to help out and tells his younger self that he should never wander off to dangerous places on his own yet praises him for his courage. He goes on to tell him that he'll only become stronger so that he can protect his dear sister, while trailing off for a moment, before they both grin, much to Mipha's amusement.

Yunobo and Daruk smiling

Yunobo and Daruk smiling after saving Kakariko Village.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Daruk and Yunobo take Vah Rudania to help defend Kakariko Village and its Sheikah residents from Ganon's monsters and the Yiga Clan commanded by Sooga. After the battle passes with their victory, the Sheikah citizens rejoice for their rescuers as Daruk waves to them. Yunobo sees Daruk looking at him and nervously refuses to take credit for their victory, and he explains that he was once a total coward who was scared of everything. It wasn't until he met a certain friend (Link) who had inspired him to be braver and stronger he is, and he believes that he still has a long way to go. Daruk then takes Yunobo's wrist and raises it, which prompts the crowd to applaud them once more. He assures Yunobo that he is proud to have him as his descendant and he dubs him the Champion of the Future. Yunobo didn't know what to say, but Daruk tells him to give his friend his regards, which makes Yunobo smile.

Urbosa is pitched in a hopeless battle against Thunderblight Ganon over the control of Vah Naboris as she is pushed into the defensive repeatedly and she soon falls to the Divine Beast's lower levels and drops to one of her knees as Thunderblight goes in for the kill. Revali is also in a fight against Windblight Ganon and is constantly dodging its lasers and unable to land his shots with his bow. He soon cries out in pain when a small laser hits his left wing, despite trying to dismiss it as a simple scratch, he is thrown off-balance as Windblight Ganon charges its laser cannons at him as he could only watch helplessly at this point, but before all hope was lost for the two Champions, a Gate of Time appears and Rito arrows smack into the demon's cannons, throwing its aim away from Revali and Teba reveals himself.

Riju saves Urbosa's life

Riju and Patricia save Urbosa from Thunderblight Ganon.

Riju and Patricia emerge from another one and immediately rams into Thunderblight Ganon before it could reach Urbosa, to the Gerudo's surprise by their presences. Riju insists that they need to focus on the battle right now. As Vah Medoh is too high for them to reach, Princess Zelda suggests heading to Vah Naboris to help Urbosa so she can find a way to reach Medoh. As the Gerudo Chiefs from the present and future start to struggle once more with Urbosa noting how fast it was moving, Riju beats herself down for thinking she was strong enough to protect her. Urbosa then saw that help has arrived and assured her that the least she did was give the party enough time. They managed to finish off Thunderblight Ganon, Urbosa was still tired from the battle and uses the power of the newly freed Naboris's lightning generators to create a giant updraft to use to reach Medoh. After getting past the monsters the group managed to reach the updraft and use the paragliders to reach its level. Teba distracts Windblight Ganon so that Revali can get revenge on it for trying to kill him; he shoots bomb arrows at it, but it managed to block them. Teba is flustered that it was still alive, but Revali assured him that he managed to give enough time for the rescue party to arrive. Unlike with the other Blights, Windblight Ganon only retreats in defeat. With the dust settling, Urbosa takes a moment to thank Princess Zelda for her efforts and thanks Riju for saving her life, though Riju states that they have all fought as one. Revali approaches Link, the person he picked on and the same one who saved his life and insists that he would have been just fine without him but guessed that it was better that he was here after all, which shocks Teba enough to almost make a comment on Revali's behavior before Urbosa cuts him off before he could say anything unintentionally hurtful to Revali. Urbosa then asks Princess Zelda about the fate of the castle. Once hearing of these events, Revali and Teba join forces to take back Western Hyrule; Teba managed to protect Revali by destroying the Guardian Skywatchers aiming for him and he is soon pursued as well; Revali returns the favor by shooting Bomb Arrows back at his pursuers, leaving Teba impressed by his skills. With his signature smirk, Revali prepares to unleash the full extent of Vah Medoh's power. As they were taking out the outposts, Windblight Ganon returns with a vengeance in one last attempts at taking not only Revali's life, but Teba's as well. Fortunately, Revali was ready for it and turned the tables on it by destroying it and managed to secure the area.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Revali took notice of a small Rito child wandering alone in the forest and loses sight of him. He reports to Teba about him, which leaves the latter in distress and pleads with him to come along. Revali allows him despite his doubts regarding his panicked state and they enter the forest plagued by monsters. Teba begins asking questions regarding the missing child, and Revali reveals that the child has the similar face and the same-colored feathers as him. After some searching, they located the child whom Teba recognized as his only son, Tulin. The boy explains that he somehow managed to be in the forest. Teba is reluctant to leave his son alone, but the Rito Captain offers to help escort him. When Tulin meets Revali, he mistakes him for another Rito warrior though the shocked Revali corrects him that he is the real deal. Teba tells Revali about his familial connection with Tulin, leading Revali to realize that they both traveled back in time. Tulin continues to gush at how skilled Revali is, which leads the Rito Champion to believe that he is still remembered, and no one has ever broken his records. When they reach their intended destination, which they found is a dead end, Revali is stressed out that they don't have a way out without the Koroks' help. Luckily, Tulin had already learned from the Koroks that there are secret passages since he understood wind patterns and he managed to lead the adults out after they took out the last wave of monsters.

Revali tells Tulin that he still has a way to go

Revali with Teba and Tulin.

As they escaped to the forest entrance, Teba tells Tulin to thank Revali since he saved his life. Tulin complies as he trots over to Revali to do so. The Rito Champion praises Tulin, stating that he is pretty good for a little kid. Happy to hear that, Tulin reveals his intentions of doing training so that he can be just like him as he jumps close to nervous Revali's face and hopes to master the Great Eagle Bow. Revali sighs as he reminds Tulin that he was nearly killed by the monsters and notes that he is still happy, and he adds that it probably won't be long until he's the master of the wind like him. Teba agrees and adds that he must first surpass his own father. Tulin then imitates Revali's sarcastic persona, causing Teba to burst out laughing before he stopped himself when Revali looks seemingly miffed at first, asking if it was meant to sound like him. Teba is at a loss for words, but Revali starts to chuckle and breaks out in a fit of laughter as Teba and Tulin follow suit. After that, Tulin summons his updraft calling it "Tulin's Tornado" to fly up, though he falls to the ground as Teba walks up to him. Revali chuckles again telling him that he still has a long way to go, affectionately nicknaming him "kid".

Riju and Urbosa after defending the Royal Ancient Lab

Riju and Urbosa after saving the Royal Ancient Lab.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC Urbosa and Riju head out to the Breach of Demise to help protect the Science Academy defend the Royal Ancient Lab from a siege of monsters led by Master Kohga. At the end of the battle, Urbosa sees the Thunder Helm in Riju's possession and tells her how impressed she is at handling the Thunder Helm. Riju places it on her head and attempts to explain her important duty as Gerudo Town's future chief, only for Master Kohga to swipe it from her and placed it through his top knot. He taunts Urbosa that her lightning attacks won't work against him now that he has it; but Urbosa knows that he doesn't really know how to properly use it and managed to strike him with her power anyway, making him drop the Thunder Helm, allowing Riju to retrieve it. When he gets back up, he demands to know how she managed to bypass the Thunder Helm's protection. Urbosa only hisses that it would take him a hundred years to figure out how to use it. Furious, Kohga vows that he will eventually have it, even if it took him that long before he vanishes, leaving both the present and future chiefs to catch their breath.

With all the Champions alive and the Divine Beasts liberated early, Princess Zelda recalls Sidon's explanation on how he witnessed his sister in battle ended up in the past and she realized that Terrako was responsible for the Champion's survival and keeping control of their Divine Beasts and expresses her eternal gratitude for its deeds and turns her attention to Akkala Citadel where Robbie, who somehow escaped the Yiga Clan's grip, awaited them.

Astor revives Blight Ganons

Astor reviving the Blight Ganons

When Astor finds out that the Champion Pilots have survived their encounters with the Blight Ganons and the Divine Beasts staying under Hyrulean control, he turns on the Yiga Clan by reaping the spirits of the fallen soldiers and uses them to revive the slain Blights. Master Kohga and Sooga are shocked by his taking of such extreme measure as they demand an explanation. Astor mocks them over their slow-wittedness and explains that as their foes are gaining strength, they must alter their tactics and adds that they can finally be of use for once in their lives as he summons a Link Hollow to kill them. Sooga managed to block its attacks and tells Kohga to flee. Kohga runs a few steps before stopping himself, refusing to leave his best lackey behind, with this resolve, Sooga swears to protect him if it meant that he will likely die. Astor further jeers at the scene as measures are being taken and echoes his earlier words to them that they will play their roles, weather they like it or not and descends into a maniacal laughter, beginning his spiral into insanity as it was clear that the heroes are defying his dark prophesy.

Sooga and Kohga

Sooga and Master Kohga struggling to escape the skirmish.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, Master Kohga and Sooga barely managed to escape from Astor, but they find themselves under constant attack by Ganon's forces and Astor's Hollows as well as the Malice enemies and the Blight Ganons. Sooga is badly injured as the surviving Yiga attempt to make a retreat to find and ally with the Hyrulean Forces. Sooga urged Master Kohga to make his getaway as his condition would slow them down, but the latter stubbornly refuses to leave him behind. They evaded Windblight Ganon and Thunderblight Ganon for a while, but they were forced to deal with Waterblight Ganon and Fireblight Ganon, and they managed to ward them off for a while as Sooga takes the offensive despite his waning strength in an effort to protect the remaining Yiga forces as Kohga couldn't do it all alone. After this however, Sooga collapses in exhaustion, forcing Kohga to carry him over his shoulder. Sooga asks Kohga to leave him behind though the desperate Kohga refuses to hear him talk like that. Sooga recalls the day he first met Kohga when he was a starving young man and was held at blade-point until their leader came out and offered him a banana and tells him that he will repay him at a later time, leading Sooga to join their ranks. When the Blight Ganons found them, Sooga managed to use his Yiga technique to immobilize the Blights with what little strength he has left. As Sooga won't be able to hold on for long, he urges Kohga one last time to make his escape. Now torn between leaving his best man behind or going down alongside him, Kohga finally relents, albeit reluctantly and flees from him utterly devastated over leaving him to his apparent fate with the Blights. With Master Kohga having escaped safely, Sooga draws his blades as he stands up to fight to the death against the elememtal demons and asks if he has fully repaid Master Kohga.

Chapter 6[]

HWAoC Akkala Citadel

Guardians attacking Akkala Citadel.

At Akkala Citadel, the soldiers inside are surrounded by Guardians and monsters. They had found that they were in a hopeless battle against them with their morale being so low, but Robbie assured them that had a feeling that their luck might change and was proven right when Divine Beast Vah Ruta arrived with Mipha and Sidon on board to grant them extra firepower. Mipha managed to strike a Guardian before it could slay Link and assured them that they have them covered and will be there. Mipha tells Sidon how proud she is of Sidon for what he has become as an adult and Sidon replies that they can do this, with his tone giving off melancholy in regards from coming from the future where his sister didn't make it alive and couldn't protect her then, Mipha then turns her focus on the battle and she and Sidon join tridents. Mipha leaves Vah Ruta to help heal the wounds of the soldiers and find Robbie while Sidon takes control to handle some of the tougher forces. As Ruta's systems started to go haywire, Daruk and Yunobo arrive to provide much needed back up to help hold the line until the Hylian soldiers are able to man the cannons with the intent to destroy the bridge, which caused three Malice Guardians to fall with it. With the Guardians destroyed and the bridge broken down to prevent further attacks led to a big victory as Akkala Citadel still stood. Robbie instructs the group to head to Fort Hateno to find Purah there, who also barely escaped the Yiga Clan.

Princess Zelda’s Magic

Princess Zelda's sealing magic awakens.

Link and the party find that Fort Hateno is also under siege from Ganon's army and will fall if they don't do something. Urbosa and Riju join forces to assist those at the fort. Riju saw how horrific its state was in and Urbosa tells her that she shouldn't sound so down, but Riju isn't convinced due to the vast numbers until Urbosa reminds her that she is the reason she herself is still alive, with Naboris also keeping its pilot and asks for her hand, Riju does so, and they leap into action as they ramp through the battlefield taking out vast numbers of foes. When Naboris is exhausted of its power, enemy reinforcements begin to surround them, flustering Urbosa until Riju gives her the pep talk to bring her back up. It was then that Divine Beasts, Vah Medoh, Ruta, and Rudania arrive to blast away the armies, leaving Urbosa to mull over what took them so long. With only a small number of enemies to deal with, Link and the party managed to get there without much trouble. As they get into the interior of the fort, Astor was waiting for them and summons the revived Blight Ganons and taunts the princess of her impending death and Link engages all four of them alone to protect the girls as they flee the area, however Princess Zelda recalls her father's last stand and breaks free of Impa's grasp as she runs back and reaches her hand out and calls out his name as her dormant power suddenly awakens before their eyes, to Astor's horror and to Zelda's surprise, as it purified the surrounding Guardians and stunned the Blights. She then proceeds to deal with the rest of the Guardians until Purah arrives and explains that she has a way to deal with the Guardians and they defeat Waterblight and Fireblight Ganon and then Windblight and Thunderblight Ganon soon after. With the Blights gone, Purah activates a failsafe that managed to wipe out the vast majority of the corrupted Guardians that actually made-up Calamity Ganon's main unit, leaving him with only his monster and fewer Guardians that weren't affected by Purah's failsafe, effectively giving Hyrule a huge advantage.

The now confident Princess Zelda takes command of the leaderless army and gives them a rallying speech to boost their morale. Later, she and Impa meet with a certain Hylian soldier who is actually Master Kohga in disguise, but this time he doesn't want them dead. Because of Astor's treachery and learning how Calamity Ganon actually views him and the Yiga Clan, along with Sooga missing in action, he and his surviving units have resolved to defect to Hyrule's side to get revenge on Astor and Ganon for their mistreatment of them.

In the Guardian of Remembrance DLC, King Rhoam and his Royal Guard were fighting several monsters and they eventually found themselves in a losing battle as more Moblins headed their way at the worst time as they were battle weary. As fortune has had it, Urbosa arrived, leading the Gerudo vai soldiers, refusing to let them fall to the monsters, as well as her unwillingness to lose her deceased friend's husband and the father of Zelda. After the dust settles, they arrive at the Great Plateau where King Rhoam apologizes to Urbosa for causing her trouble. Urbosa reminds him that his death would have broken down Hyrule's morale and adds that his daughter is on her way to the Great Plateau. She goes on to say that Zelda's wings have grown so strong, likely moreso than that of her own mother. Rhoam then smiles and thanks Urbosa as he heads for the Temple of Time as Urbosa mulls that Princess Zelda's efforts were not in vain.

Chapter 7[]

Upon learning of other Hylian knights staying at the Great Plateau, they head out to assist them. Because the plateau was too steep for climbing, Purah had managed to get the Sheikah Towers back online and enhanced its teleportation abilities, which brings them up onto it. The Yiga Clan lets them know that the path is obstructed by rubble, so Purah suggests that they use the Shrine of Resurrection as a travel gate to get up there. By eliminating the monsters, Impa informs Zelda that someone is waiting for her at the Temple of Time which she goes to see who it was. She finds that the person was none other than the one whom she thought was killed at Hyrule Castle: King Rhoam. He explains to her that when they were held at gunpoint by the guardians, the device that she gave him reacted to his situation and upon using it, it turned into an ancient shield that deflected the lasers at the last moment and he and his Royal Guard took advantage of this to flee the castle before the automations recovered from the impact. This shield had saved his life in his direst moment and father and daughter reconcile. He then directs the army to their last destination, Hyrule Castle.

Hyrule United

The United Army of Hyrule.

At Hyrule Field, Purah supercharges the Sheikah Towers to summon armies from every tribe in Hyrule and uniting them together, which includes the Champions and their Divine Beasts. Master Kohga excitedly rallies the Yiga Clan to get their revenge, Mipha is relieved that everything went well with Sidon adding that destroying Ganon is the last step to total victory, Daruk and Yunobo enthusiastically to put the Calamity behind them, Revali looking forward to flaunting their power with Teba telling him to make his tribe proud, and Riju displaying optimism at the union of the armies as Urbosa notifies the princess that they are awaiting orders. With her father's approval, Princess Zelda takes control of the army and reminds them that Hyrule is their home that must be protected and that can only be done when they are united rather than divided as they charge for the outposts and when they saw a barrier surrounding the castle, the Champions are forced to refrain from firing, and the party had killed the Malice monsters that were generating it. Using her power to dispel the defenses, Zelda orders the Champions to attack and lasers from the Divine Beasts were fired, weakening Ganon considerably. Despite the appearance of the Blood Moon reviving them regularly, the Hyrulean forces managed to breach the castle.

Mourning Champions

The Champions and Zelda mourning for Terrako.

Revali and Teba led the air forces while Zelda led the ground army as they charge into the castle. They were confronted by Astor and Harbinger Ganon, the latter turning into a more monstrous form as the prophet madly rants that it is his fate to destroy them. As the army went through the interiors of the castle, they were able to permanently dispose of the Blight Ganons and they managed to reach the villainous duo and defeated them. Astor finally has a mental breakdown as he orders the harbinger to destroy them, but he himself was devoured alive by Ganon's Malice to take on its complete form. During the transformation, Terrako becomes infected with the Malice and the grief-stricken princess was forced to duel it. With Terrako badly damaged, the princess mourned it as it weakly plays her lullaby to console her. She recalls that as a child, she assembled Terrako alongside her mother, in another scene when she was looking up at the moon in sadness in the wake of her mother's death, it plays its lullaby for her, and it was later confiscated by her father as he thought of it as a mere toy. She remembers its name as the Champions arrive and mourn its state. With her strength resolved as are the Champions, Princess Zelda swears to ensure that Ganon falls as they make their way to the castle's sanctum where Ganon was waiting for them. Initially, Ganon proved to be too strong for them and could not be hurt by anything, and Zelda was forced to use her magic to try to seal it and protect her friends. Her power brings Terrako back up on its feet and it rushes upstairs and jumps between her and Ganon, destroying itself to shatter Ganon's invincibility, allowing the heroes to wound Ganon enough for Link to use the Master Sword to render it susceptible to Zelda's magic, which finally manages to destroy him for good.

Hyrule at Peace

Hyrule at peace.

As the people rejoice as they watch as the sun rises in response to Ganon's defeat and their victory, the Champions and those involved take a moment to enjoy the moment as Hyrule reverts to its peaceful state, Terrako's screw that it left behind during its sacrifice starts to shine and the descendants of the Champions are sent back to the future, but not without saying their heartfelt good-byes to the pilots as Princess Zelda gives them her eternal gratitude and wishes them hope for a brighter future.

Epilogue[]

Terrako's reunion with Zelda

Terrako's reunion with Princess Zelda

After Calamity Ganon's destruction, the warriors take part in hunting for Terrako's fifty components that it lost during the final battle out of gratitude for all of its feats and positive impact it had on the kingdom and brought them to the Ancient Research Lab where Purah and Robbie are reassembling it. Initially, they feared that they were unsuccessful until Zelda stands in front of it. Terrako then starts to fully function once more, and the Champions happily look on as it reunites with the tearful princess, who welcomes it back.

After that, Terrako travels around Hyrule where it met with the Champions; Mipha greeting it, Daruk jumping for joy, Revali letting it ride on his back while flying, and Urbosa saving it from the remaining monsters and met with other warriors along the way. Eventually, it returns to Hyrule Castle where Princess Zelda, Link, and the Champions are waiting for it and Daruk pulls them in for a group hug.

Secret DLC Ending[]

During the secret DLC ending, unlocked through completing all the Memory Quests in the EX-Scenarios, Princess Zelda is seen cooking a meal for the soldiers and added some milk. When she adds some monster extract, the soldiers including Link are reluctant to try her recipe. Link lets the princess take a ride on the Master Cycle Zero and she speeds off with the hero chasing after her. Later, She and Link are hanging out at the castle together and when Link turns and walks away from her, the voice in the Master Sword chimes in to greet the princess which pleasantly surprises Zelda while Link is unaware of it.

Sidon is bonding with his younger counterpart when Mipha came to see them and pets both of them on their heads, prompting them to grin once more. Daruk and Yunobo are seated on a high cliff of the canyon as they enjoy their Rock Roasts together. Revali, Teba, and Tulin lounge in the Flight Range with the young Rito sleeping on Revali's lap and the Rito Champion stops the blanket from blowing away, to Teba's delight. Urbosa and Riju are seen sand-seal surfing in the desert sands at night. Impa and Terrako have started to get along better as the latter no longer swats her hand away. Hestu is dancing for the passing Hyrulean military as King Rhoam looks on in approval at his talent.

The Champions at the Sheikah Tower

The final secret DLC cutscene.

The Champions come together to talk amongst themselves as Terrako, who has saved them all, amuses them. In the final scene, the Champions are atop of the Sheikah Towers, all having returned to their original attires. Impa asks if she plans to proceed, and Zelda confirms that she is going through with it and jumps off the platform and floats away on the paraglider with Terrako joining her. They enjoy the scenery as they fly and see that the kingdom is recovering well from the war and the princess has gained a new-found confidence that she needed, and notes that their efforts to protect the land were well worth it.

Gameplay[]

Link fighting Bokoblins

Link fighting some Bokoblins.

Like the previous Hyrule Warriors, Age of Calamity mixes the hack and slash gameplay of Koei Tecmo's Dynasty Warriors series of video games with settings, characters, and other elements from Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda series. In addition to keeping the combat, material crafting, and weapon-upgrade systems from Hyrule Warriors, the game incorporates environmental puzzle solving and the use of the Sheikah Slate tool from Breath of the Wild with every playable fighter using Sheikah Runes like Cryonics, Stasis, Remote Bombs, and Magnesis, but with each fighter having their own unique attacks and animations with them. Confirmed playable characters include Link, Princess Zelda, the Four ChampionsDaruk, Mipha, Revali, and Urbosa – and the Sheikah warrior, Impa. The game also features compatibility with Nintendo's amiibo figures, with the figures of the Four Champions having been re-released alongside the game.

While it's not much of an open world setting like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is, it reuses the map of Hyrule from its recent predecessor and will still reward players for completing scenarios, missions, and sidequests in certain areas across Hyrule. The weapon-durability system from Breath of the Wild is completely absent, while the Badge and Fairy systems the previous Hyrule Warriors games is also removed, with quests now giving the rewards of added combos and Hearts. Battlefields are redesigned similar to One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 to have a more naturalistic feel and less of an emphasis on securing strongholds and regular bases like its predecessor.

Zelda fights with Sheikah Slate

Princess Zelda fights with the Sheikah Slate.

Many of the game's features are returning mechanics either from Breath of the Wild or Hyrule Warriors. Food can be cooked before every battle to provide a boost that lasts as long as that conflict goes. The recipes are mostly the same from BotW, with similar effects. In place of weapon deterioration, they can be fused together like in HW, increasing their might and passing on useful skills that increase combat ability. Both of these resources thrive off of the materials available from the battles, which are the same goods found in BotW.

Modes[]

All modes of Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity take place on one world map of Hyrule, which is exactly like the map from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. There are, however, several different functions offered on this shared map.

  • Story Mode - has a total of seven chapters and twenty battles. They tell the story of how Hyrule prepared for and fought Calamity Ganon. This story follows a timeline different from the one from Breath of the Wild, with a differing outcome than what was shown in the other game.
  • Challenges - These are usually shorter battles with special conditions, like time limits, character limits, or extra objectives to fulfill. They are similar to the Adventure mode from Hyrule Warriors, but more manageable compared to Hyrule Warriors complete edition's full collection of maps.
  • Quests - These are static events that the player while playing Story Mode or the Challenges. They provide numerous benefits including increased combos, extra heart containers, etc. at the cost of their requested materials. Completing enough of these in areas of the map earns large rewards of rare materials.
  • Services - They are locations on the map that sell goods, train characters' level (up to the highest leveled character the player possesses), dye clothing, upgrade and smith weapons, and test out combos on a neutral battle map. As the story progresses, these services are unlocked and upgraded including permanent discounts. The merchant shops are all travelling, so they only have a chance to spawn between battles at the different accessable stables.
