How to Win at Super Smash Bros., also referred to as How to Win at Smash,[1] is a promotional tutorial web series created by Nintendo for the Nintendo Video service on the Nintendo 3DS. It was produced by Nintendo and created using in-game footage from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, with the final three episodes using footage from Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. The series follows a narrator commentating over in-game footage and teaching the viewer various controls and techniques in the game.
Premise[]
"Watch fun segments with your favorite characters, then learn the moves that will teach you How to Win at Super Smash Bros."
History[]
The series premiered on the Nintendo Video service on November 16, 2014, with final episode premiering on January 31, 2015. Every episode of the series has since been officially uploaded to YouTube by Nintendo of America's and Play Nintendo's official YouTube channels.[2] The series was also available to stream on the Nintendo 3DS variant of the Nintendo eShop following the discontinuation of Nintendo Video,[3][4] until the 3DS eShop itself was shut down on March 27, 2023.[5]
Overview[]
The series was made using in-game footage recorded in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, similar to machinima. Every episode begins with the narrator shouting "How to Win at Super Smash Bros.!", followed by a curtain call where he lists the fighters that appear in the episode. Sometimes a fighter is left a mystery until they're revealed later in the episode. Each episode highlights a mechanic of the game. A scenario then plays out, with the narrator providing commentary. These scenarios emphasize basic game mechanics that are useful when actually playing the game. Once the scenario ends, the video shifts to an instructional video where the narrator goes into further detail about the featured game mechanic. The video ends with a reminder that the game shown is available in stores and digital download, and to stay tuned for further episodes.

Trivia[]
- The narrator in episode 9 erroneously suggests the player press R with certain fighters (using Toon Link as an example) to use their grab as a way to recover. However, with the default button mapping, this will result in an air dodge—the default input for a grab aerial is actually the ZR button.
