Hot Newz 64 is the tenth of the promotional videotapes sent out to Nintendo Power subscribers. This one was released to promote two then-upcoming Nintendo 64 games by Rare - Jet Force Gemini and Donkey Kong 64.
For this video, the gameplay footage is framed in a program resembling an entertainment news show, hosted by Steve Sobel. After showing footage for the two featured games, Sobel interviews insiders Travis Williams and Brian Hartman about them. A commercial for the Donkey Kong Country: The Legend of the Crystal Coconut VHS is also incorporated into the program. In-between the segments, Dan Owsen (actually played by an impersonator with his face pixelated) answers fan mail and provides tips for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario Golf, and Star Wars Episode I: Racer.
This was notably the last of Nintendo's promotional videotapes to end with a montage of other Nintendo 64 games available at the time (one of which would ultimately not see an official release on the N64, oddly enough):
- The New Tetris
- Mario Golf
- StarCraft 64
- NBA Courtside 2: Featuring Kobe Bryant
- Pokémon Snap
- Duke Nukem 64
- Rayman 2: The Great Escape
- Gauntlet Legends
- Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M.
- World Driver: Championship
- Shadow Man
- 40 Winks
- Toy Story 2
- NFL Blitz 2000
- WWF Attitude
- Hybrid Heaven
- Hydro Thunder
- Nuclear Strike
- Re*Volt
Notes[]
- Sobel states that "the Donkey Kong Country TV show is coming to the Fox Family channel," but at the time of the video's release, the show had already been airing on Fox Family for about a year.
