Hala is the Kahuna of Melemele Island,and as such is considered to be one of the strongest Trainers on the island. He is Hau's grandfather. He, along with Professor Kukui, gives the player his or her Starter Pokémon. Later on, he hosts a ceremony to celebrate the player and Hau becoming Pokémon Trainers. The player later faces him in a Pokémon battle in the Melemele island challenge's grand trial. He is later revealed to be a member of the newly-established Alola Elite Four.
