The great faries in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time gave Link new powers, rather than updated items. In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords, a Great Fairy would appear after you defeat a boss and would give you a special key. In The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, there were once again multiple different Great Faries, each one giving you upgades on items. In The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, the Great Faries would update your bomb bag, wallet, and quiver, as well as restore your health.

Finaly, in their most recent appearance (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess), five Great Faries would appear in the Cave of Ordeals, where they would send out many little faries that would restore Link's health. If you found the final Great Fairy, she would give you the Great Fairy's Tears which would be placed in a bottle.
