Ghostbusters is a game originally released in 1984 for the Commodore 64 computer. It was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System and released in North America in 1988. It was an action/adventure game based on the 1984 film of the same name.
The game was featured in two episodes of The Angry Video Game Nerd, in which he primarily criticizes many aspects of the game.
Gameplay[]
The game involves the Ghostbusters going around the city and catching ghosts to earn money to buy equipment. There are yellow ghosts that fly from the corners of the screen towards the building in the middle of the city which is labeled 'Zuul' for some reason. At the top of the city are the gas station and the ghost busting shop. The bottom of the city is where the Ghostbuster headquarters is located. You control the Ghostbusters logo to look for buildings that are haunted by ghosts. If a building flashes red, it means there are ghosts there. You can only catch the ghosts if you have a Proton Pack equipped and an empty Ghost Trap or Super Trap. You start out with 10,000 dollars which you can use to buy your starting equipment. Catching the ghosts requires driving to a haunted building and trapping them in your Ghost Traps. If you don't have a Super Trap, you'll have to drive back to the Headquarters to empty your traps or buy some new ones. The yellow ghosts that go into the Zuul building will raise the city's PK Energy. If the PK energy gets too high, the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man will destroy one of the buildings in the city. In order to enter the Zuul building and destroy Gozer, you need to earn a specific amount of money. To reach the place where Gozer is, you need to climb up to floor 22. There are some items you can buy in the store that help you avoid the ghosts that fly around the screen. The A button will make you walk one step forward up the stairs. If the ghosts here touch you three times, you will receive a game over and must try again from the start of the game. Once you reach the top of the Zuul building, you will have to destroy Gozer to save the city. Going down to the bottom of the screen here will cause the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man to climb up the building. If he gets all the way to the top or if you get hit by Gozer's attacks too much, you will receive a game over. You must shoot Gozer enough times to win the game and save the city.
Development[]
End screen[]
Many games released at this time had many spelling and grammatical errors, mainly due to poor translation from Japanese. This game has a relatively well known ending screen, which displays the word 'Conglaturation'. This is a common translation error due to the Japanese language not distinguishing clearly between the R and L sounds.
