The Gex series of video games began in 1994 when the first game, simply titled Gex, was released for the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer gaming console by Panasonic. The game was later released for the PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Microsoft Windows.

The story follows a gecko named Gex who goes on different adventures through crazy worlds. He also has a love for television and all things pop culture.

It wasn't until the second game in the series, Gex: Enter the Gecko, was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998 that he first appeared in a Nintendo-related console. He appeared again in a third game, Gex 3: Deep Cover Gecko, in 1999.
