The GS Ball' is a type of Poké Ball that originated in Pokémon the Series before being incorporated into Pokémon Crystal.

Appearances[]

At the beginning of the second season of the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum and his friends are sent by Professor Oak to Valenica Island to pick up an item from his colleague, Professor Ivy. The item in question is the GS Ball, a mysterious Poké Ball, colored gold and silver, that cannot be opened or transported. Ash is tasked with bringing the GS Ball to Professor Oak for examination (a task that takes him over 30 episodes to do as he spends most of the season competing in the Orange League). When he finally does bring the GS Ball to Professor Oak at the end of the season, he too cannot find out anything about it, and asks Ash to deliver it to Kurt, the Poké Ball researcher and manufacturer who lives in Azalea Town. Midway through the third season, after Ash and his friends arrive in Azalea Town, the delivery is made, but like before, Kurt is unable to provide any new information about the GS Ball. The GS Ball was therefore left with Kurt so he could continue inspecting it, and thus was not seen again afterward (except in a brief flashback).

In the games, it has only appeared in the Japanese version of Pokémon Crystal where it could be obtained from an event and used to encounter Celebi. Through hacking, one could get it and use it in the US version.

Notes[]

  • In a 2008 interview, Masamitsu Hidaka revealed that the anime's GS Balls was planned to contain a Celebi which would heavily feature in a major arc for the Johto seasons. However, when it was decided to instead feature Celebi in Pokémon 4Ever: Celebi: Voice of the Forest, the story arc was discarded due to redundancy (a similar concept would later be used with Meloetta in Pokémon the Series: Black and White). As a result, the GS Ball was left with Kurt in the hopes that the viewers would eventually forget about it (though they ultimately wouldn't).[1]
