"Flying Pikachu, Rising Higher and Higher!" is the 18th episode of Pokémon Horizons: The Series, and the 1,252nd episode of Pokémon the Series. It first aired in Japan on August 18, 2023, in the United Kingdom on February 27, 2024, in Australia on March 22, 2024, in sub-Saharan Africa on April 17, 2024, and in the United States on May 10, 2024. This episode shows how Friede met Captain Pikachu and formed the Rising Volt Tacklers.

Plot

Intrigued by Captain Pikachu's apparent ability to fly during his battle with Roy, Liko, Roy, and Dot persuade him to reveal the origins of his Pikachu. When he was younger, he became aimless after quitting his unfulfilling lab job as a Pokémon researcher. His passion was rekindled when Lucca, his former schoolteacher, introduced him to a wild Pikachu, who used its tail and Volt Tackle attack to become airborne. Through his efforts to befriend Pikachu, Friede discovered it sought to fly to watch the morning horizon, inspiring him to travel the world and learn more about unusual Pokémon like Pikachu. Friede recruited his childhood friend Orla to build the Brave Olivine out of his acquaintance Ludlow's seaboat, and dubbed Pikachu as the ship's captain, leading to the formation of the Rising Volt Tacklers.

Trivia

• This episode premiered in Japan on Ikue Otani (Pikachu's voice actress)'s 58th birthday.
• The opening was played over the final scenes of the episode instead of near the beginning, with the opening credits being displayed over them. Likewise, the series logo, usually displayed during the opening, was instead displayed over a shot of the Brave Olivine.
  • Oddly enough, in the YouTube and TVer distributions, the opening does also play near the beginning of the episode additionally to the end of the episode alongside with the regular opening credits with those credits not being present at the end of the episode.
