A Fire Flower(JP) is an item in the Mario Series that first appeared in the game Super Mario Bros. for the NES. Certain blocks containing Super Mushrooms would instead reveal Fire Flowers if Mario was in Super Mario form. The Fire Flower allows Mario to hurl fireballs out of his hand which bounce along the path until it hits a barrier. It can defeat minor enemies with one hit, like Goombas and Koopas. However, the fireballs cannot always defeat major bosses with a single hit as it usually requires multiple hits to knockout bosses.

Appearances

Main Mario series

The Fire Flower appears in every 2D entry in the Mario series excluding Super Mario Bros. 2. In Super Mario Land, it was replaced with the Superball Flower that mostly functioned the same. In the entries up through Super Mario World, whenever Mario got hit, he would return to small Mario when he loses his Fire Flower. They changed this starting with the Game Boy Advance remakes.

The Fire Flower made it first usable appearance in Super Mario Galaxy. This version can throw fireballs to defeat enemies, light torches and melt ice. This power-up is however, on a timer, going away after 20 seconds. Super Mario Galaxy 2 repeats these effects. In Super Mario 3D Land, it works like in the 2D series. The latest appearance of the Fire Flower in the 3D series is in Super Mario 3D World with the same effects as 3D Land.

Mario Kart series

In Mario Kart series, it is used as the symbol for the Flower Cup, the second of the main Nitro cups.

It first appeared as an item in Mario Kart 7. In this game, a player who gets this item can throw fireballs resembling Mario's special power-up in Mario Kart: Double Dash‼. The player can throw up to 10 fireballs in quick succession though they run out before if the player is too slow. Hitting an opponent with a Fireball will cause them to spin out for a short bit. Fire Flower mainly appears from 2nd to 4th place. The item returned in Mario Kart 8.

Super Smash Bros. series

It also appears in the Super Smash Bros. series. Its normal function has been integrated into Mario and Luigi's moveset as Fireball, but it also became an item that appears in every installment. While the item resembles the power-up (as a round red flower), it is an item that the fighters can wield to spew out a limited stream of fire until it runs out. The item's design changed in Super Smash Bros. Brawl to resemble its modern incarnation.

Paper Mario series

In the Paper Mario series, the power-up is used as a special item that lets Mario throw a series of Fireballs towards their enemies. It will deal extra damage to ice enemies and heal fire-based enemies like a Lava Bubble. It is absent from Super Paper Mario but, they return in Sticker Star as a sticker in their modern design.

Trophy descriptions

Super Smash Bros. Melee

"Once you grab this item, press and hold down the A Button to make the flower breathe flames until its power gives out. The Fire Flower is incredibly useful when you want to push someone off the edge of a stage. In Super Mario Bros., it transformed Mario into Fire Mario, changing his garb and enabling him to throw fireballs."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

"A flower that breathes flames when you press and hold the attack button. The flames don't last forever, though--after a while, the flower will lose its fiery power. You can also throw Fire Flowers at enemies to set them on fire for a brief moment. In Super Mario Bros., Fire Flowers were used to transform Mario into Fire Mario."
