The Fire Arrow is a recurring item in The Legend of Zelda series, first appearing in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. It is a charm, that gives Link the ability to imbue his arrows with fire magic, causing anything the arrow hits to burst into flames. Fire Arrows can be used to light torches, melt ice, and burn spider webs among other things. Ice monsters like the Freezard and Eeno that are resilient against sword strikes are especially weak to fire arrows.

Appearance[]

In Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask the Fire Arrow is a charm that resembles an arrow stuck inside of an orange gemstone, the gemstone is implied to be a chunk of the sun in Ocarina of Time.

Games[]

The Fire Arrow is obtained by three different protagonists in the Zelda games; the Hero of Time, from Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask; the Hero of Winds from Wind Waker and the Hero of the Wild from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom. The first two are able to use magic power to ignite regular arrows into Fire Arrows while the Hero of the Wild must find them, pre-made in shops.

Hero of Time[]

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time[]

The Fire Arrow is obtainable by Adult Link once he has the Fairy Bow. To do so, he must stand on the altar above the Water Temple in Lake Hylia and shoot an arrow into the rising sun as it peeks over the horizon. The Fire Arrow falls from the sun, landing on a pillar in the middle of the lake and can be reached after restoring the water to Lake Hylia. Using it requires two units of Magic Power. The Fire Arrow is essential in Ganon's Castle at the end of the game.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask[]

In Majora's Mask, the Fire Arrow is the dungeon item for Snowhead Temple after defeating the dungeon's mini-boss Wizrobe. This time, usable by Young Link in conjunction with the smaller Hero's Bow. Its primary use is melting ice and defeating cold-based enemies. It is used heavily in the Great Bay Temple in conjunction with the Ice Arrows in order to stop or start the water wheels inside the dungeon and change the direction of the flowing water.

Hero of Winds[]

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker[]

Getting the magic for Fire Arrows requires Link to first learn the "Ballad of Gales" song from Zephos' brother, Cyclos after chastising him, then use the song to warp to interior of the Mother and Child isle, where the Fairy Queen grants him both the Fire and Ice Arrows.

Hero of the Wild[]

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild[]

The Fire Arrow returns as a very common item in Breath of the Wild. Unlike in the main series, where ordinary arrows can be charged with fire magic, here Link can purchase them premade at any given store in the game. The game also features Ice Arrows and Bomb Arrows, and two new Arrow types: Shock and Ancient.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom[]

Super Smash Bros. series[]

The Fire Arrow appears in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a special move of Young Link.

Trivia[]

  • The fact that Link can fire an arrow into the morning sun from Lake Hylia implies that Hyrule's sun is both small and close enough to the planet at certain times of day that it can be hit by an arrow from that spot. This and the Sun Song seem to suggest that Hyrule's sun actually revolves around the world rather than vice versa.
  • The method of obtaining the Fire Arrows in Ocarina of Time involves standing on a sacred altar in Lake Hylia and shooting an arrow into the morning sun. This could be a reference to the Goddess of Light, Hylia, who the lake is named after, as she is associated with the sun and sunlight.
  • The Fire Arrow serves a similar function to the Fire Rod from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, in that both are magic-using projectile weapons that can light things on fire.
