Final Fantasy II(JP) is a video game produced by Square for the Famicom. Although it was originally only available in Japan, an English translation of the game would eventually be available on a Nintendo platform through Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls for the Game Boy Advance. It is the sequel to Final Fantasy.

Plot Overview[]

The story and characters are not related to the first Final Fantasy game. The Empire of Palemecia is trying to take over the entire world. A rebel army is created in the Kingdom of Fynn to stop the Empire. The Emperor's Dark Knights attack Fynn, and succeed at taking it over. Four teenagers, Firion, Maria, Guy, and Leon are attacked by the Dark Knights. Firion, Maria, and Guy end up in Altair, the new home to the rebellion, and eventually join the rebels to help fight Palamecia.

Gameplay[]

This game has a world map that connects all of the game's towns and dungeons. Walking on top of the town or dungeon on the world map will take you inside. On the world map and in dungeons, there are random encounters. The battle system in this game is that of a turn-based RPG. Unlike the original Final Fantasy, your characters don't level up on this game. Instead, their stats level up by using them in battle. Another feature in this game is "Key Terms". You can learn certain words, and say them to various NPCs for various effects, such as learning new Key Terms and progressing through the game.

NES English Translation[]

This game was not originally imported to English-speaking countries. It was entirely translated, but Square decided not to release it in America. A prototype ROM of this translation can be found on the internet. English speaking Final Fantasy fans can now play this game on the GBA, in the remake Final Fantasy I & II: Dawn of Souls. The 8-bit original also received a fan translation by NeoDemiforce that was released on March 21, 1998 and an updated fan translation by Chaos Rush in 2019.
