Logos also known as Malos is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 2. He is the number two of Torna, the secret organization who wants to find and capture Pyra. As number two of Torna, he is the right hand man of Jin, the leader of the organization. He is said to be a classy and skillful Driver. Malos is however more important than he seems at first glance, he is also an Aegis, a legendary Blade created by The Architect. In many ways, Malos and his Driver, Amalthus, can be considered as the main antagonists of the game. He is also the main antagonist and final boss of the Torna ~The Golden Country~ story.

History[]

Origins[]

Trinity Processor

The Trinity Processor

Logos is one of the three Aegises, extremely powerful processing units that were originally used to control The Conduit's power. Eventually, when Klaus used The Conduit to create the universe of Xenoblade Chronicles, most of the personel present in the Rhadamanthus low orbit station were sent to distant dimensions and Logos was left alone with The Architect, Pneuma and Ontos. Ontos eventually used launched a space time transition event during which he transported himself to the universe of Xenoblade Chronicles.

Logos and Pneuma's Core Crystal brought back to Alrest by Amalthus.

The Architect was left with Logos and Pneuma and entrusted them with the duty of managing the Blades he had created as a failsafe against the apparition of someone like him in the new world he had reconstructed. Time passed and a new breed of mankind was eventually born in this new world. Eventually a man named Amalthus was born in the world. Amalthus' youth was a time of great struggle and Amalthus himself lost his mother as a young kid, which started his subconscious hatred for the world that he initially tried to fight after murdering his mother's assassins. Amalthus became a priest to try to guide humanity away from what he saw as its sinful nature. He was eventually broken by withnessing a soldier he rescued killing a family to steal their belongings in 3562. He killed the soldier out of hatred and started to wonder if this horror was the world that the Architect intended. Amalthus decided to search for answers by himself after discovering technologies from the Land of Morytha. He arrived in Elysium and stole the two remaining Aegises cores after the Architect decided not to appear before him as Klaus couldn't help but to notice the similarities between what drove him and Amalthus. When Amalthus came back, he awoke Logos who manifested itself as Malos. Since Amalthus was Malos' Driver, Amalthus' despair about the state of the world, his need for answer from his god, and his disgust for humanity rubbed on Malos' personality and transformed him into a being that had for sole purpose to destroy the world and all sentient beings that Amalthus had grown to hate for their hubris and selfishness.

The Aegis War[]

Malos aegis

Malos standing before the original Aegis walongside Amalthus and Praetor Rhadallis.

Early into his existence, Malos' personality was similar to a more explicitely antagonistic Amalthus. The two went to decimate an army from an unspecified nation together with Malos' power for exemple. Malos was eventually shown the Aegis, a sacred item that served as the embodiment of the revelations that Meldinare, the founder of Indol recieved. Malos destroyed the Aegis and took its name as his own title, which is where the term used to refer to the Blades born from the Trinity Processor comes from. Malos said that he was born of divinity and not just a reflection of it when justifing his actions to Praetor Rhadallis. This shows that Amalthus' desire for an answer from god manifested itself as a part of Malos. Malos eventually left Amalthus after he was promoted to the rank of Praetor by the Praetor to continue his destruction of the world alone, telling him that he could simply exist without him unlike other Blades and that he will purge the world of the worthless like they both want. Fearing that Malos would eventually oppose him, Amalthus found someone who could resonate with Pneuma in the person of Addam Origo and sent him and the newly awakened Mythra after Malos. This started the first phase of the Aegis War during which Malos destroyed many Titans. Mythra was awakened around a year before the events of Torna in 3563. Her and Addam spent most of that year chasing after Malos around Alrest but never meeting him directly. They mostly formed a militia in the Kingdom of Uraya with the approval of the king. Addam was fearful of Mythra's power after withnessing Malos' destructions and decided to chase Malos without his militia to avoid accidentally killing or hurting his own men. During that chase, they mostly encountered the aftermath of his attacks and sometimes some Gargoyles that were left behind. Some of these attacks are said to have occured on Genbu and Temperantia.

Malos siren drawing

Depiction of Malos' Siren during the destruction of Coecia.

In the year 3564, Malos destroyed the nation of Coecia under the guise of a joint military intervention led by the Indoline Praetorium and the Empire of Mor Ardain. Malos went to see Amalthus not long after and told him that he was going to attack the Tornan capital and that he should look foreward to the destruction. Amalthus would signal Malos' presence to the authorities of the Kingdom of Torna. Soon after, Mythra and Addam who were following the trace of Malos in the Kingdom of Torna encountered Lora and Jin after the later two were attacked by one of Malos' Artifices. Lora and her Blades agreed to join Addam's group and stop Malos after spending some time together. As they made a detour to Gormott to locate Lora's mother, they encountered Emperor Hugo Ardanach and his Blades. The emperor joined Addam and Lora on their quest to stop Malos after Addam, who is a childhood friend of the emperor explained to him that they were hunting down Malos. The group then went back to Torna were they recieved a message from Amalthus giving them Malos' intentions.

Malos taunts the tornan heroes

Malos taunts the heroes of Kingdom of Torna.

Upon reaching Auresco, the capital of Torna, Malos launched his attack and finally confronted the party. He expressed interest at Mythra, which he called his partner as they were both of the same nature due to their divine origin according to him. Malos then managed to push back the party all by himself despite being heavily disavantaged and used the opportunity that they were all exhausted to elaborate on his hatred towards humanity. He thinks that human natures leads them to killing eachother and themselves and that his large scale destruction is just a little help to make them understand that their true purpose is to destroy themselves completely for being unworthy of the life given to them by the Architect. Malos then reveal that he knows that the Tornan titan's real form is sealed away and that he wants to break the seal to use its incredible power to burn Alrest down. He then leaves the party with two of his Gargoyles and leaves with a third one to the seal while they are unable to follow him. The party is saved by Azurda who destroys the Gargoyles and then take them up in the sky to follow Malos. They are too late and Malos escape with the seal while Azurda is held back by energy beams fired at him from the sky by some of Malos' Gargoyles.Malos announce that just destroying humanity would be boring and that waiting for them to fight in one last battle would be a way better finale. He confirms that he only sees his struggle as an "easy cure for the tedium of being" after Mythra accuse him of only seeing this destruction as a game.

Malos is damaged

Malos is damaged at the end of the Aegis War.

The party then follow Malos to the core of Torna after Malos unleashed Torna's true form as he told them too. During the final battle, Malos is trying to make Mythra realize that she is an Aegis like him and that she was made for destruction. At this point Malos still thinks that the violent impulses that drive him were partially designed by the Architect and not a result of Amalthus' influence. As a result he thinks that Mythra is just hiding her true destructive nature behind a mask. During the final fight, Malos also confronts Jin. After Jin questions his reason to be so bloodthristy, Malos answer to him that humans built the bonfire. Jin dismiss this as an excuse to kill but Malos snaps back with a question about the nature of humans. Asking Jin if he really thinks they are all as good as Lora. This destabilize Jin who had to deal with people he really wanted to kill in the past like Gort. Mythra then catches Malos' attention once more by summoning her Siren, Malos does the same and the battle intensifies. After Malos' Siren manages to temporarily disable Mythra's Siren, he attacks Auresco and mortally wounds Milton, which causes Mythra to have a breakdown and engage Malos with the same amount of brutality to his delight. Malos and Mythra clashes in the sky of Torna with their Sirens and Mythra is able to take Malos by surprise at the end of the battle by tapping into The Conduit due to her distress. Malos' Siren is destroyed and his body and core is partially destroyed as he is hurled into the Cloud Sea. The aftermath of Mythra's final attack also destroys the Core Crystal of the Tornan Titan, causing his death as well as Hugo who sacrifice himself to save Addam. At the climax of the war, Malos was left for dead and the Tornan remanants were killed by Amalthus who then put the blame on the destruction of Spessia, the titan they had taken refuge on, and the end of Torna on the Aegises. Lora is killed in this attack and Jin becomes a Flesh Eater by consuming her heart.

Aftermath of the Aegis War[]

Malos reaches out to Jin

Malos reaches out to Jin.

After a while, Malos reappeared heavily damaged by Mythra and without most of his Aegis' powers. After so long, Malos began to question the very nature of his emotions, feeling like they were not his own and began planning to climb the World Tree and obtain answers from the mouth of The Architect himself. Since the end of the war, the passage to the world tree was destroyed by the Great Void, an artificial void maintained by Artifice Ophion, one of Pneuma's original Artifices. Ophion was controlled by the royal family of the Kingdom of Tantal who used the Omega Fetter, an ancient artifact belonging to Mythra, to control Ophion.

Even if Malos was aware of the elevator at the base of the World Tree he was unable to access it since it required an Aegis to open the way and since his Core Crystal was damaged during the Aegis War, he was unable to display the qualifications to open the World Tree so he began to search for Pyra who was put into a deep slumber by Addam after the war. He eventually found Jin, who was allowed to live long after Lora's death after becoming a flesh eater. He managed to convince him to cooperate and formed the Torna terrorist organization and reach the World Tree together. The group managed to recruit Akhos, Mikhail, Nia and Patroka before beginning their search of the Aegis.

Retrieving and pursuing Pyra[]

Malos and Pyra in dream Elysium

Malos invades the dream of Elysium to tell Pyra to come to her place of awakening if she want to save Iona.

In the year 4058, Torna manages to locate Pyra's location inside a vessel formerly owned by Addam, which was located at the bottom of the Cloud Sea. Needing a Leftherian to open Addam's seal and reach the other Aegis, Malos hires Rex and takes him, along with Jin and Nia, to where Addam had sealed it away. They come upon Pyra, and when Rex goes to touch her Core Crystal, Jin kills him; however, Pyra wakes up and resurrects him, allowing him to fight against Jin and Malos, Nia betray Torna and they are rescued by Azurda and escape.

Malos later travels to Fonsa Myma with Akhos and speaks to Cole, who he knew as Minoth during the war. He offers to help heal him, but Cole refuses. However, Malos is able to take the young girl he cares for, Iona, hostage. He tells Pyra to come to the Olethro Ruins alone. Malos tries to force Pyra to transform back into Mythra by attacking her while accusing her to hold back on him. The party arrives at the ruins, where they fight with Akhos and Malos. They are overpowered, due to Obrona's ability to disrupt the Ether flow in the area, until Vandham is able to fight back against them. Telling the others to flee, he is killed by Malos, and in a last-ditch attempt to save Rex, Pyra reverts to her other form, Mythra. Malos's and Akhos's Blades are reverted to their Core Crystals, and they are forced to retreat.

Second confrontation[]

Malos and Jin talking about the nature of their emotions

Malos and Jin talk about the nature of their emotions.

Malos does not really encounter the party directly for a few chapters after that. Pyra reveals to the party that Malos used to be another Aegis. Malos then mostly stays in the background of the story and interact with the other members of Torna when they plan on acting against the party. He mostly expresses concerns toward Jin's well being when he goes off to cause a diplomatic incident in Temperantia showing that he is somewhat more willing to grow closer to another compared to how he was during the Aegis War. He is also there to take care of him after said diplomatic incident where Jin fell victim to his old age as a flesh eater when trying to dispatch the party after killing Fan la Norne. During one of their talk, Malos makes it clear that he has a lot of doubts about the true nature of his sentiments and what about them can be considered his own. Jin simply replies that he is starting to sound like a human but that probably just mean that they are closer to Blades than they think. He and Jin later meet the party again in the Kingdom of Tantal, where Jin reveals his true form and is able to nullify all of Mythra's attacks and abilities, overwhelming the party with his speed. To save the others, Pyra gives herself up to Torna, who escape with her and the Omega Fetter to open the way to the World Tree and fulfill their plans.

Malos steals Pyra's data

Malos steals Pyra's Core Crystal data to rebuild his own.

Malos and Jin take Pyra to the Gotrock Oracle Ruins at the Cliffs of Morytha near the Great Void, and Malos explains that his Core Crystal was damaged during the war, and he plans to use the datas in Pyra's Core Crystal to restore his strength by regenerating his own crystal. As he does, he steals Pyra's memories of Rex and the others, and manages to restore his full power. He and Jin are attacked by Artifice Ophion, which is revealed to have an autonomous defense mechanism, but Malos uses his newly wawakened powers to reprogram it and use it as his own.

Return of the second Aegis[]

Malos Ophion beam

Malos uses Artifice Ophion to fire at Pneuma's Siren.

When the party arrives at the Cliffs of Mythra, Malos confronts them and reveal his weapon, which is also a Monado since he is an Aegis. They battle against him and Nia increases the cell replication rate in his body before droping him from the Cliffs where he lands on a ledge down below. When the party arrives at the end of the cliff, Malos arrives behind them soon after and reveal that he was just toying with them before stating that now that his powers have returned to him Pyra is useless to them and he throw her toward Rex. Rex decide to fight Jin and Malos anyway and are about to lose until Pyra and Mythra are awakened as Pneuma and overpower Jin. Malos then explain to Rex that he is planning to use Artifice Aion, an Artifice created specifically to destroy the world, to finally realise his ambition. Adding that the Aegis only exists to destroy. Rex tries to dismiss his reasoning about the true nature of the Aegises but Malos himself refuses to acknoledge his point. He then summons Ophion to attack the party but Pneuma summons Artifice Siren to fight against Ophion and as a result, the party is sent in the Cloud Sea.

Malos Jin hug

Malos and Jin's final goodbye.

Malos, along with the rest of Torna, takes the Monoceros down after them, and picks up Jin in the Land of Morytha. They return to Alrest, and use the Marsanes to travel to the World Tree. Jin and Malos disembark and make their way up through the tower, even as the party climbs up behind them. When they reach the top, Jin stays behind to confront the party one last time, as Malos continues on. Malos is clearly sad about Jin's decision but respect it and hugs him before letting him stay behind. He is the first in the history of Alrest to actually find The Architect, who addresses him as Logos and explains that he is already fading away after saying to Malos that his sentiments are indeed what he had chosen by himself and stopping Malos from trying to kill him.

Final fight between Malos and Rex[]

Final confrontation with Malos

The final confrontation between Rex, Pneuma and Malos.

Malos leaves and takes control of Aion, sending Artifices to destroy all of humanity and Alrest itself. The party arrives to Aion's chaber and confront Malos. Malos makes a joke about how they came in just in time before the final act before giggling that he sounded like Akhos for a moment. Nia is visibly angry with him and tell him that all the other members of Torna to which Malos respond that he figured as much but there was nothing to be sad about as they all wished to die and the least he can do is to be happy that they got what they wanted. Rex then interject by saying that all of this is only Amalthus' influence on him after learning that it is whayt originally spurred his hatred for the world in the first place. Malos then tells him that it doesn't matter if he thinks he could repent as he has already decided that those feelings were no one else's but his and nothing they could say actually matter to him. Malos continues by telling him that the only reason Jin even carried on was because Lora's final words were the only thing tying him down and that they were a curse that prevented him to loose his life even after he lost all will to live and everything else he ever had. He then goes on to say that this is an exemple of what makes this world a wretched place beyond any hope of salvation. Azurda tries to call him out by saying that he also is a part of the world and that he and Amalthus were a direct result of Jin's misery. Malos sarcastically tell Azurda that he has gotten smarter with age before exclaiming that he is absolutely right and that he is also a monster far beyond saving and that as such he doesn't need justification to fight the party and destroy the world. He then ascends to Aion while smilling. Pneuma tries to appeal to him by asking if he doesn't feel anything knowing that this condradicts what the Architect actually wanted for the world. At this point Malos just tell her no, and that it is not the role he has decided for himself. With one final taunt towards Rex and Pneuma, asking them to show him the role that they have chosen for themselves in this world.

Malos death

Malos dies

In the middle of the final battle with Aion, Rex tries to see him one last time that the world can change but Malos tell him that nothing will ever change if he is not even able to defeat him with his strenght. Rex then tells him that no matter what he will change it and pushes Aion back. Malos ask him why won't he simply let go, and who does he even do it for. Rex answer that he does it for himself and that Jin just wanted to connect with Malos after he showed him a path, he did not simply wanted to die. He then ask Rex if he would forgive someone like that after how many people died because of it. Ask respond that forgiving isn't easy but that is the nature of this world and that they should find a way to walk forward instead of causing more destruction. After a fierce battle, the party damages Aion severely, causing it to eject Malos. Malos then tells Rex that he wishes he had met him sooner, and as he dies, Mòrag muses that he has finally found meaning to his life. Malos appears one last time as a disembodied voice speaking to Pneuma when she sacrifice her body to stop the colapsing World Tree. Asking her if she liked living.
