Retro City Rampage is a downloadable game available for the WiiWare service. It was released on February 28, 2013. In this game, the player progresses through the storyline set in an open world environment, not unlike Grand Theft Auto. What sets this game apart from GTA and the like is that it is presented like an 8-bit videogame released on the NES or an arcade machine. It was also ported to the 3DS and Switch.

Retro City Rampage DX[]

This is an update to the original that was ported to the 3DS. It launched on February 4, 2014 in the United States and February 20, 2014 in Europe and Australia. The game received an update in 2015 to receive various enhancements to incorporate New 3DS controls and a stabler frame rate.

The DX version was added to the Wii Ware version in November 2014 as an update. It also added support for the GameCube Controller in addition to the Wii Remote and Classic Controller

In general, this update rebalanced the game and updated the games visuals. There are a number of challenges added.

A Switch version was released in 2017 with a retail release that fall.
