Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury is an enhanced port of the 2013 Wii U game, Super Mario 3D World, for the Nintendo Switch. This version of the game introduces a variety of new and enhanced features different from the original version. Amiibo support and online multiplayer are introduced in this game, alongside with new gameplay changes.

It also features a new game mode titled Bowser's Fury in which Mario embarks on a single-player, open-environment adventure to collect Cat Shines to restore Lake Lapcat and defeat the gigantic, darkened Bowser. Many new features not present in the original are also the ones introduced in it's successor, Super Mario Odyssey.

The game was released worldwide on February 12, 2021.

New features

Connect and Play

New online and local wireless modes.

This mode consist of two new multiplayer features: Online Play and Local Wireless Play.

Online Play

Through a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, players can now compete in completing courses through online multiplayer. The gameplay will take place depending on the host's current save file, and will have the voice chat feature. Cloud Save is another online feature as well.

Local Wireless Play

While four players can play locally on a single system, the game can also be played wirelessly in portable mode or with a Nintendo Switch Lite console. Two players can also play on a single system in this mode.

Amiibo

The game now has amiibo support.

The game utilizes amiibo support for the first time, and the Cat Mario and Cat Peach figures have been released alongside. For both modes, the Cat Mario amiibo grants the player an invincibility Super Bell, while Cat Peach grants the player a random power-up. It is also be compatible with the Bowser Jr. and Bowser amiibo figures. Both figures have different functionalities between versions, and will grant a Super Star to the player in 3D World. It was also announced that the figures be restocked. The same functionality applies to other Super Mario series amiibo, only it applies to both modes. It is also universally compatible with all other amiibo and will grant a 1-Up to players, just like in the spin-off Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Similar to Odyssey, the player can push a button to activate the amiibo scanner, in which the logo will pop up.

Bowser's Fury

A brand-new game mode, titled Bowser's Fury, features an open-world environment which Mario is sent to Lake Lapcat and must team up with Bowser Jr. to stop the gigantic, darker Fury Bowser and save the land from darkness. It is also called Fury World in Asian territories.

Snapshot Mode

Stamps are now used for decoration in Snapshot Mode.

A returning feature from Super Mario Odyssey, players can press the button to freeze the gameplay and access a mode to take pictures. Filters and placement of logos are also an option. Aside from that, players can place the fully-colored stamps (see below) collected to place them onto flat surfaces. Even the menu is nearly identical to Odyssey.

Stamps have a brand new functionality unlike the original version. They are now used to add into backgrounds for Snapshot Mode. Also, they are fully-colored, as opposed to the original which are only white with black outlines. They have been previously used for posting drawings on Miiverse which discontinued in 2017. Stamps can be placed on flat surfaces including walls and floors, and only a certain amount can be placed at a time.

Miscellaneous

Aside with the new features introduced above, much of the original features return in the Switch version as well, including the playable cast and power-ups. The only new power-up in this game is the Invincibility Bell obtained through the Cat Mario amiibo. The Captain Toad levels now have 4-player multiplayer, in which additional players play as a Toad Brigade member. Touchscreen-focused controls are replaced with motion controls in which the player presses the "R" or "SR" buttons to activate an emblematic cursor. The general differences include the changes to HUD and Menu UI, and removal of some features due to the Switch's limitations and discontinued services.

Reception

Like the original, the game has received favorable reviews from critics. The game has a "89" score on Metacritic, indicating "generally favorable reviews".

Sales

The game reached 7.45 million units sold by the end of November 2021. As of the end of 2021, the game reached 8.85 million units sold worldwide. It surpassed 9.43 million units by the end of March 2022.

Trivia

• This is the fifth Wii U Nintendo-published game ported over to the Nintendo Switch to omit the "Deluxe" term as originally rumored. This was previously done in the spin-off Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze.
• For some reason, the game's teaser website has been announced as of January 6, 2021, even though it has been active since December 2020.
• Due to the dark themes of Bowser's Fury, the European version has a "7" rating from PEGI.
• Strangely, this version has a changed interface and display designs, unlike the Switch/3DS versions of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker which maintained the same UI and HUD designs as the original 3D World game.
• This is composer Daisuke Matsuoka's first work in a Mario production, and his first in a large-scale 3D game.
• The second version of the Fury Bowser theme was also played in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It was titled "Attack! Fury Bowser".
