Fairies, sometimes called Pixies, are a recurring sapient species or race from The Legend of Zelda series. They are one of the oldest races in the Zelda series originating in the first Legend of Zelda. Fairies are generally depicted as small, winged beings, though higher ranking fairies, such as the Great Fairies may be much larger than a human. They possess magical powers and are associated with nature, often being found hiding in plants or under rocks. Fairies don't typically interact with the other races of Hyrule directly, though may play pranks on travelers on occasion. They seem to have a connection with the Great Deku Tree and by extension, his Kokiri and Korok attendants as well as their fallen counterparts, the Skull Kids; as Navi in Ocarina of Time is shown to follow the orders of the Deku Tree and fairies are often found in the presence of the later races.
Fairies are sometimes said to be invisible to adults, however, magically inclined races, like Hylians (including Link and Zelda) and Zora seem to be able to see fairies at any age. In most games, fairies act as health items and will magically restore Link's health when caught. They can also be kept in an empty bottle and will revive Link the second he dies; effectively acting as an extra life. Great Fairy can be found in hidden caves or special Fairy Fountains hidden thruought the land and can heal Link, as well as grant him new magical spells or abilities or upgrade his items.
Physical Appearance[]
Depending on the game, they might either appear as winged female humanoids in dresses, or balls of light with wings.
The Legend of Zelda[]
In The Legend of Zelda, fairies simply heal Link whenever he finds them. They are indistinguishable from Great Fairies, with the exception of Great Fairies being found by ponds.
Ocarina of Time[]
In The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, fairies either heal Link or provide an extra life. They can be kept in a bottle for future use as a healing item or a revival from death.
Four Swords Adventures[]
In The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords Adventures, Force Fairies provide extra lives and are acquired throughout the game, including upon the completion of a level.
