Eidos Interactive is a United Kingdom publisher that merged with Square Enix in 2009. The publisher was known for the Tomb Raider, Hitman, and Deus Ex series.
History[]
The company was founded in 1984 as Eidos Technology. In 1996, the companies merged with Domark Software, Simis and Big Red Software as Eidos PLC. In 2004, Eidos had lost most of its money resulting in Elevation Partners to bid for them at £71 million. SCi Entertainment outbid them at £74 million result in Elevation Partners to withdraw its offer with the takeover finalized in May 2005. SCi let go of Eidos' old management and opened a new Montreal studio to start next generation games. However, expansion led the company to take losses of £100 million. SCi approached Square Enix to purchase the company for £84.3 million, with the finalized deal occurring in April 2009. Square Enix then stopped publishing as the Eidos brand, leaving the only place where the Eidos Interactive logo appears as a part of studios still with the Eidos name, The rest of Eidos would merge with the existing Square Enix Europe.
In 2022, Square Enix sold Eidos Montréal, Square Enix Montréal and Crystal Dynamics to the Embracer Group for $300 million. The sale included a number of classic Eidos properties such as Deus Ex, Tomb Raider and Legacy of Kain.
