The Dragon Slayer series includes about 20 games, most of them designed by Yoshio Kiya. Only a few of the games in the series were ported or released on Nintendo systems.

The series consists of very different games, belonging to at least three different genres. Several titles spawned spin-off games or even their own sub-series.

The games Dragon Slayer, Xanadu: Dragon Slayer II, and Hydlide are notably the precursors of all action-based role-playing games. In particular, The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link are both heavily based on Xanadu.

The sixth entry spawned a series called The Legend of Heroes with the third entry separating completely from the Dragon Slayer series. The modern incarnation of the series is connected via the Trails subtitle with each set of games telling an arc of the interconnected story.
