Donkey Kong 3(JP) is an arcade game that features Donkey Kong and Stanley. Stanley is a bugman that comes to defeat Donkey Kong on the account that he broke into his greenhouse. Stanley will now have to use his bug spray to not only defeat Donkey Kong, but also kill all the bugs that DK let in. This is the first Donkey Kong game that doesn't feature Mario and is the first one not to be a direct platform game, which could have led to its unsuccessful sales. Instead of being a platform game, it was rather a shooting game. It was ported to the e-Reader in Donkey Kong 3-e.

Development[]

Donkey Kong 3 was developed and published by Nintendo and released in arcades in 1983. Unlike its predecessors, which featured Mario as the protagonist, Donkey Kong 3 was developed under the direction of Gunpei Yokoi and starred a new character, Stanley the Bugman, marking a significant departure from the previous Donkey Kong titles. The development team aimed to refresh the formula by shifting from platforming to a more shooting style gameplay, blending elements of fixed shooters with arcade action. Stanley’s goal was to protect his greenhouse from invading bugs while driving Donkey Kong upward using bug spray, an unusual twist on the series' premise. The game was created during a time when Nintendo was experimenting with gameplay genres and refining their arcade hardware. Despite using bright, detailed visuals and tight mechanics, Donkey Kong 3 was not as commercially successful as the original two games. However, it reflected Nintendo’s willingness to take creative risks during the early '80s arcade boom and remains a unique outlier in the Donkey Kong series.
