Dipplin (JP) is a Grass/Dragon type Pokémon introduced in Ninth generation games Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, in the Teal Mask DLC. It is one of the three branched evolved forms of Applin, the others being Flapple and Appletun. It evolves into Hydrapple when leveled up while knowing Dragon Cheer.

Physiology and Behavior[]

Dipplin is a worm-like Pokémon that lives inside an apple. In contrast to Applin's other evolutions, Dipplin bears a strong resemblance to Applin. Unlike Applin, however, Dipplin appears to be composed of a pair of separate creatures known as "wyrms"; the head and tail visible outside of Dipplin's apple appear to belong to two different ones. The head belongs to the "fore-wyrm" while the tail belongs to the "core-wyrm". Both of Dipplin's bodies are light green, with a yellow-green underside. The fore-wyrm's head has two large yellow leaf-like eyestalks with small black pupils, and a tall, thin protrusion similar to a horn or an antenna. The core-wyrm's tail that sticks out from Dipplin's rear has two leaf-like features on it.

Dipplin's evolution is said to have been triggered by the Syrupy Apple, found exclusively in Kitakami. The pair that composes Dipplin works together inside their shared apple. They are capable of producing syrup, which they use to coat their apple in layers. This syrup has a fragrant scent that captivates Dipplin's opponents. They can use the syrup to engulf their opponents and hinder them.

Origin[]

Dipplin, like its evolutionary relatives, appears to be based on the popular image of a worm burrowing into an apple, as well as a pun on the wyrm, a type of dragon — hence its Dragon typing. Dipplin also appears to be based on a candy apple, which is made by coating apples with a sugar mixture, and is often served at festivals and holidays. Dipplin's Shiny coloration may draw inspiration from the similar treat of caramel apples, or from golden apples.

Dipplin may be a combination of di- (prefix meaning double), dip, and Applin.

Trivia[]

  • Despite its evolved form being unreleased at the time, Dipplin was able to use Eviolite upon its debut in The Teal Mask.
  • Dipplin and Hydrapple are the only:
    • Evolutionary relatives introduced within a single generation that are not next to each other in National Pokédex order, with Dipplin being number 1011 and Hydrapple being number 1019.
    • Dragon-type Pokémon consisting of multiple bodies.
  • Dipplin is the only Pokémon that requires a TM to evolve, as it cannot learn Dragon Cheer without it.
  • Dipplin, Chansey and Porygon2 are the only non-fully evolved Pokémon that evolve from another Pokémon through the use of an item.
