Delibird (JP) is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a dual-type Ice/Flying Pokémon that made its first appearance in the second generation games Gold and Silver. Its future Paradox Pokémon counterpart is Iron Bundle.
Physiology and Behaviour[]
Delibird is a red, penguin-like Pokémon with a white, hollow tail. Its face and chest are covered in white feathers with two, three-pointed crests above its eyes. Black markings surround its circular eyes, and it has a light yellow beak and feet. There is a single white spot on its stomach. Its feet have two digits each.
Delibird is omnivorous. It carries food bundled up in its tail. It normally gives stored food to its chicks, but has been known to share its food with humans stranded on icy mountains. Delibird's signature move, Present, allows it to carry special items in its tail that may cause damage or heal its opponent. In a flock, the Delibird with the largest tail is its leader. Delibird tends to live in mountainous regions, making its nests over sharp cliffs; one notable area of the world is around Mt. Everest.
Appearances[]
Main Pokémon games[]
In Pokémon Sun and Moon, the player saves Delibird from Team Skull on Melemele Island. They were helping an old man harvest berries.
In the Ninth Pokémon generation, Delibird gained a Paradox Pokémon counterpart in the form of Iron Bundle.
Other Pokémon games[]
In Pokémon Channel, Delibird is the delivery boy for the "Shop 'n Squirtle."
In the anime[]
During the Johto saga, Delibird was introduced as a debt collector for Team Rocket, hounding James and Jessie for their failures.
Origin and inspiration[]
Aspects of Delibird's appearance appear to come from the rockhopper penguin. However, its red-and-white color scheme, its ability to give presents, and the appearance of carrying its sack-like tail is likely to have been derived from Santa Claus and possibly the white stork.
Its name comes from the union of the English words delivery and bird .
Its German name, Botogel, may derive from the union of the words, Bote (messenger) and Vogel (bird).
Its French name, Cadoizo, probably a contraction of the words, cadeau (gift) and oiseau (bird).

Reception[]
Following its debut, Delibird had mixed reception. Its weakness in battle, owed partially to the unreliability of its "Present" move, was universally criticized. Reactions to its appearance were more split, with some believing Delibird to have an endearing appearance, while others described its appearance as off-putting and criticized its sack-like tail as an odd design choice. Iron Bundle, a robotic Pokémon directly inspired by Delibird, became well-known for its high level of combat power, dwarfing that of its inspiration.
Trivia[]
- Delibird is one of the few Pokémon who can learn TM moves when it learns fewer than four moves by leveling up.
- Delibird has Insomnia as its Hidden Ability although it already has access to Vital Spirit, another Ability with exactly the same in-battle effect.
- Starting in Pokémon Emerald, both of Delibird's regular Abilities have the same field effect, which is also shared by Pressure.
