Custom Robo is a fighting game developed by Noise originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1999. It is the first entry in the Custom Robo series. It released on the iQue Player in 2006 and eventually saw a rerelease on the Nintendo Switch as a part of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack in 2022. It was followed by Custom Robo V2 the year after.

Gameplay[]

The main gameplay is an arena fighter where the player controls a robot and fights the other robots in a small arena called a Holoseum with various barricades and platforms. There are three main attacks plus a dash and jump. The three main attacks are the gun, the bomb and the pod. The gun is the most straightforward weapon that will let the player fire in front of them in a burst of shots. The bomb is the secondary weapon which will fire a projectile with a small area of effect and deal more damage but will have a short cooldown between shots. The pods are similar to bombs but will move in a pattern and explode on contact. Only a couple of these can be deployed at a time. The dash will thrust the player forward for a brief period of invincibility and knock down opponents in con. In an battle, after dealing a string of hits, the opponent will be put into a knockdown state where they are unable to react. This knockdown state quickly subsides after they land and turns into the rebirth state where they are temporarily invincible and get the opportunity to attack back. The fight is over when one side's robot gets to 0 hitpoints. At the start of the match, the players' robots are launched as cubes with each side of the cube indicating what part is on the top. If the cube lands on the head icon, the player will start with head up and able to instantly move. If the cube lands on any other side, the player will have to take time to get up with the feet icon taking the longest.

Customization[]

The other main aspect is that the player is able to customize their robot with parts unlocked over the course of the game. Each of the weapons, the body and the feet can be changed for different effects. Unlike later games in the series, the player has to return to the Robo Station to go to the Parts Generator to obtain new parts.

Plot[]

The main plot of the game is about how the player character receives a Custom Robo from their mother on their birthday called Ray. They have moved to a new town and are inspired to try to become a Custom Robo Master. Later in the story the player encounters the Dark Organization Dread, an evil organization dedicated to stealing nano technology in order to take over the world. The Hero eventually stops Dread and becomes the Champion.
