The Condor is the main antagonist of Nintendo's Ice Climber video game series. The Condor is a mischievous, animal-thieving pterodactyl who has an obsession of stealing various vegetables, such as eggplants, cucumbers, turnips, mushrooms, carrots, and more. The Condor is the Ice Climbers' arch-nemesis, being responsible for stealing their vegetables and spreading them across a variety of several, enormous and glacial mountains.
Biography[]
In the Ice Climber series, the primary goal of the Ice Climbers is to make it to the summit of the mountain so that the duo can catch the Condor's talons. During the beginning of each level, the Condor can be depicted flying upwards into the sky with a vegetable hanging onto its talons. During the end of each level, the Ice Climbers will have the chance to reach a bonus stage that is timed for a maximum limit of 40 seconds. It littered with vegetables, and if the duo make it to the summit in time, the Ice Climbers will be able to jump up and catch the Condor flying around horizontally at the top of the stage. Missing this will cause the Ice Climbers to burst into tears on the completion screen.
Other media[]
Super Smash Bros.[]
Ever since the Ice Climbers were introduced to the Super Smash Bros. series, the Condor has made various sorts of appearance, varying through the different installments.
Super Smash Bros. Melee[]
In Super Smash Bros. Melee, the Condor makes its representative appearance in the Ice Climbers' Target Test. Their role is to hold the tenth and final target at the top of the stage, referencing its quintessential role in Ice Climber. Although this character makes an appearance, it lacks its own trophy, but they are mentioned in the Ice Climber's Classic Mode description.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl[]
In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, the Condor makes a very brief appearance, hoisting the Ice Climbers into the stage. In this game, the Condor receives an aesthetically three-dimensional model at last. However, once again, the condor fails to have its own trophy, but it is mentioned in the Ice Climber's trophy description.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U[]
In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, the Condor does not make its representative appearance in the game, but it is once again mentioned in the Ice Climbers' trophy description.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the Condor has a bigger role than it had in all other aforementioned Super Smash Bros. installments. Its role in Super Smash Bros. Brawl not only reprises with them, but in the Ice Climbers's Final Smash, "Iceberg," the Condor flies and circles around the giant iceberg the duo summons, with the Ice Climbers also being allowed to grab on to it while it also attacks other opponents. The Ice Climbers that summoned him have the option of grabbing onto him, but the other opponents that attempt to collide with them will be damaged instead. Furthermore, the Condor appears as a Advanced-rank Support-type spirit, giving the player resistance against strong winds if equipped. In its spirit battle, the player must fight Ridley and Ice Climbers on the Battlefield-based form of Summit. This fight is not only a stamina match, referencing Ice Climber, but said match is also timed and home to a frozen floor.
Characteristics[]
Physical appearance[]
The Condor appears to be a vulture-proportioned bird with orange fur at the top of its body and white fur at the bottom. It also has yellow eyes and talons with pure white claws on them. Its appearance resembles that of a pterodactyl rather than a realistic condor.[1]
Personality[]
Being a silent species, the Condor seems to basically fit the characteristics of a standard animal, with it being incapable of traditional speech or expressing sorts of emotions aside from intentionally stealing properties from other individuals. The latter, however, also makes the Condor rather irritating, especially for the Ice Climbers. Among the rest of the wildlife in the Ice Climber series, the Condor is less of a fighter and more of a coward, retreating from trouble rather than confronting it. This is evident when the Condor robs the Ice Climbers' vegetables and flies to another location without having the will to contest its opponents.
However, the Condor can occasionally fit the epitome of being a anti-villain or can be a hypocrite, as even when it robs the Ice Climbers' vegetables, it has a tendency of spreading the village's vegetables across various other mountaintops instead of directly eating it, even if the Condor has such an appetite. Thus, the Condor's victory can be short-lived, as the Ice Climbers will immediately collect the vegetables the duo pass by where the Condor spread them in. Regardless, the Condor's hobby of stealing the Chillgard Village's vegetables and performing the same actions rinses and repeats.
Trivia[]
- Despite being the series' main antagonist, the Condor does not receive its formal trophy in a Super Smash Bros. installment.
- In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's World of Light, its spirit is located at the top of the Icy Mountain, most likely in reference to its role from the original Ice Climber series.
- Additionally, the Ice Climbers are located at the bottom of the Icy Mountain in World of Light, which also likely references the duo's starting location when proceeding to scale a mountain up to the summit to confront the Condor in the original Ice Climber.
