Charmeleon (リザード, Lizardo) is a species of Pokémon in the series of the same name. It is a Fire-type Pokémon that made its first appearance in the first generation games Red and Blue.
Physiology and Behaviour[]
Charmeleon is a bipedal, reptilian Pokémon. It has dark red scales and a cream underside from the chest down. It has blue eyes and a long snout with a slightly hooked tip. On the back of its head is a single horn-like protrusion. It has relatively long arms with three sharp claws. Its short legs have plantigrade feet with three claws and cream-colored soles. The tip of its long, powerful tail has a flame burning on it. The temperature rises to unbearable levels if Charmeleon swings its tail.
Charmeleon has a vicious, hotheaded nature, and will constantly seek out opponents. Strong opponents excite this Pokémon, causing it to spout bluish-white flames that torch its surroundings. Charmeleon enjoys tormenting the opponents it fights. However, it will relax once it has won a battle. It is rare in the wild, but it can be found in mountainous areas.

Ash Ketchum's Charmeleon
Ash Ketchum's Charmander evolved into Charmeleon in The March of the Exeggutor Squad, which also marked the species' debut. Unfortunately, he quickly grew unruly and disobedient. He evolved into Charizard soon after in Attack of the Prehistoric Pokémon. His Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You! counterpart never had obedience issues.
Zippo, Ritchie's Charmeleon, is another major Charmeleon. He evolved from a Charmander sometime while Ash traveled Johto and was used to fight Butch and Cassidy but, failed to their Pokémon's headgear. He was not seen again until the Pokémon Chronicles episodes where he is used again to stop Butch and Cassidy from kidnapping Professor Oak.

Origin and inspiration[]
Charmeleon is a portmanteau of the word char and chameleon.
Charmeleon resembles more a small dinosaur than its namesake chameleon. The only shared features are the snout, a prominent head crest, and its extensive use of its tail.
