Cave Story is a WiiWare video game that is based on the freeware game of the same name. It has improved graphics and music, and features other improvements as well. If fans of the original prefer the graphics and music from the freeware game, then they can alternate between the two. The game received enhanced versions on the 3DS (as Cave Story 3D) and on the Switch (as Cave Story +).

Gameplay[]

In the game, Quote travels through side-scrolling stages, killing enemies with his weapons. Collecting crystals left by defeated enemies will level Quote's current weapon up. Quote obtains more powerful weapons as the game progresses.

Weapons[]

You can only carry 5 weapons at once with you in this game.

Polar Star[]

This is the first weapon that you will find in the game. It is an excellent all-around gun with a great fire rate, its damage is low at level one but is very good at level 3.

Missile Launcher[]

This weapon is similar to the missile launcher from Metroid. It does massive damage to enemies but has limited ammo. At level 3, it will fire three missiles at once.

Fireball[]

This weapon shoots fireballs that bounce on the ground. It deals a good amount of damage and the more you level it up, the more fireballs can be shot. It is very useful on slopes as the fireballs bounce up them.

Bubbline[]

The bubbline is a secret weapon that is somewhat difficult to use. This weapon is basically useless at level one but at level 3, it can deal devastating damage to enemies. It has 100 ammo that will regenerate when you're not firing.

Machine Gun[]

This is the weapon that Curly Brace uses. You can trade for the Machine Gun in exchange for the Polar Star if you want to use it yourself. The gun also has 100 ammo that regenerates similarly to the Bubbline but can later be upgraded so that it regenerates faster. This weapon has a very fast fire rate and does high damage. When you level it up to level 3, you can even hover in the air!

Blade[]

This high damage dealing sword is obtained after a certain event in the game. The level 2 version deals more damage but with a shorter range. Play the game to see what the level 3 version can do (due to this containing a spoiler for something that happens in the game).

Snake[]

This weapon is created by combining the Polar Star and Fireball together. It is similar to the Wave Beam from Metroid as it moves in a wave pattern and can travel through walls.

Super Missiles[]

This is nearly identical to the Super Missiles from Metroid. They are golden missiles that deal heavy damage to enemies and are also faster than regular ones.

Spur[]

This is an upgraded version of the Polar Star. It works similarly to the Charge Beam upgrade from Metroid. Uncharged shots are identical to the bullets of the level 3 Polar Star. This weapon can deal massive damage! The level 3 version can even pierce through multiple enemies!

Nemesis[]

This gun can be obtained by trading the Blade to a certain character in the game. It is most effective at level 1 unlike all other weapons. The level 3 version shoots rubber ducks that do only one damage!

Development[]

The creator of Cave Story, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, hasn't received any compensation for Cave Story, a very popular freeware PC game that has gained popularity over the years. Then one day developer Nicalis' Tyrone Rodriguez sent the creator an e-mail that was shown on his official website. He apparently told him who he was and his contributions to the video game industry. He then expressed his interest in moving the Cave Story franchise forward. After a few months and many e-mails, the two agreed on everything.

After this they had to choose which platform to release this classic on, and ultimately knew that it'd have to be through one of the big three's download services - WiiWare, PlayStation Network, or Xbox Live. They ended up choosing WiiWare, much to the delight of Nintendo fans. Rodriguez told MTV's Multiplayer blog how supportive Nintendo's WiiWare group was of the game, though at first had to convince them by explaining the new content that would be available.

3DS eShop Description[]
