The Nintendo Switch era is a purely Nintendocentric period used to describe the years after the Wii U was abandoned for the Nintendo Switch. This jump from Nintendo to their next generation console leaves a gap between 2017 and 2020 where the Nintendo Switch continues to exist alongside the 8th generation of console despite being itself the successor of a 8th gen console. This is fixed by the end of 2020 when the 8th generation officially ends and the Nintendo switch exists alongside other 9th gen consoles. Due to this, Nintendo being minimally impacted by their 8th gen competitors after the Nintendo Switch's release, and the Nintendo Switch being effectively their only active system, this period of Nintendo's history is best described as the Nintendo switch era instead of the 9th generation.
