Not to be confused with Cat Mario.

Cats seen in Bowser's Fury are colorized feline species that resemble the exact colors of characters' suits of Super Mario 3D World when using the Super Bell power-up (e.g. Pink, Peach; Green, Luigi; Black, Rosalina; Blue, Toad). There's additionally a calico color variant, as well, which is fairly similar to Daisy's colors.

They are friendly allies in the day cycle, and can be picked up and thrown. When that happens, the cat will swipe its claws repeatedly in attempt to shake free. Cats also have surprising abilities as well, such as to attack enemies, defend against Piranha Plants' fire balls, hit blocks, and smash crates.[1] They interact with baseballs, too.

Cats will also react to Mario depending on his active power-ups. They will approach to cuddle Mario if he's in his Cat form, but will run away in other forms. Either way, this does not affect progress.

When Fury Bowser appears, transforming the environment to night, the cats themselves also become darkened. Their fur will become dark and glowy and have a purplish color, with their eyes becoming yellow. Then, they will chase after Mario, and touching one will cause Mario to take damage. This is similar to Remlits from The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
