Castlevania (JP), known in Japan as Akumajō Dracula (JP), is a series of horror-themed action-adventure video games created and developed by Konami. Below are the titles released in the Castlevania series, released on Nintendo consoles.

Series Elements[]

The Castlevania series revolves the fight between the Belmont bloodline and Dracula. The Belmont descendants use their famous whip, Vampire Killer, to slay the various creatures that arise from Castlevania. The first few Castlevania games are level-based adventures where the player has to fight through stages that eventually lead to a fight with Dracula. The player can pick up subweapons over the course of the game and most like Holy Water and the Cross appear in most entries.

Starting with Symphony of the Night, Castlevania games started to become exploratory action games similar to The Legend of Zelda or Metroid where the game is a large map with bosses and upgrades hidden across the map. The weapon system is exchanged for an equipment system where the player can gain new weapons and gear over the course of the game that have different effects and stats.

Konami have supported the series beyond making new entries and spinoffs. The first was the Wai Wai World on the Famicom which had a world in each game based on the Castlevania series as well as have a Belmont playable. The Wai Wai World games later inspired a kart racing spinoff called Konami Krazy Racers which has Dracula playable. In DreamMix TV: World Fighters, Simon Belmont is a playable fighter. New International Track & Field featured cameos from various Castlevania characters including Simon Belmont. Super Bomberman R & Super Bomberman R Online featured special Castlevania themed characters. Simon Belmont and Richter Belmont became fighters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Dracula appears as a boss while Alucard appears as an Assist Trophy. In 2023, Dead Cells received a DLC expansion called Return to Castlevania, featuring various weapons from the original Castlevania series and plotline featuring Richter and Alucard.

Outside of games, Castlevania was adapted into a popular animated series by Netflix. It features Trevor Belmont and is an adaptation of the story in Castlevania III. A follow-up series called Castlevania: Nocturne will adapt the story of Richter Belmont.

Trivia[]

  • Due to the way Zelda II, Super Metroid, and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night were designed, this created the popular "Metroidvania or Castleroid" genre.
