The Cape is an item that first appeared in the SNES launch game Super Mario World. Mario or Luigi can gain this item by collecting a Cape Feather, which first appears in Donut Plains 1. The most notable ability of the Cape is that while running, Cape Mario or Luigi can launch into the air. Once he is airborne, the player can press the direction opposite of the direction currently flying every half second so that Cape Mario or Luigi can glide in the air. The cape also slows Mario's descent, provides a more effective spin attack, and allows Cape Mario to slam into the ground while flying, taking out nearby enemies.

The cape later appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island as an apparel that Baby Mario would use after obtaining a Starman, and in Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Smash Bros. Brawl as an attack of Mario's.

The cape was introduced to the Super Smash Bros. series in Super Smash Bros. Melee. Mario is the only character who can use this move, by pressing right or left with B, being his side special move. Cape does not cause too much damage. However, if an opponent throws a projectile at Mario, he can reflect it back to the sender by using his cape. If used directly upon an opponent, it delivers a minimal amount of damage and turns him around.

The cape returns in every following game: Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In all games, the Cape works the same as in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
