Bubble Bobble(JP) is a Nintendo Entertainment System, Famicom Disk System, and Game Boy video game released initially in 1987 for the FDS. The NES version of the game was later remade for the Wii's Virtual Console. It is also one of the 30 titles included on the NES Classic Edition.

Plot[]

Baron Von Blubba has kidnapped Bubby and Bobby's girlfriends and turned both brothers into Bub and Bob, their respective Bubble Dragons. The brothers are then sent to the Cave of Monsters, where they must defeat the monsters and Baron Von Blubba himself in order to save their girlfriends.

Gameplay[]

Using either Bub or Bob, players can move on platforms, fall, and jump. Gameplay is limited to one screen, so there is no scrolling. Every level has a number of monsters that players must defeat in order to proceed. To do so, the player must blow bubbles on the enemies that trap them, then bump into the bubbles themselves to pop them. Defeated enemies then turn into food items that players can pick up for more points. If multiple enemies are defeated, more food items appear.

In addition to using bubbles to trap enemies, players can also jump on the bubbles to access otherwise inaccessible areas. Overtime, there are power-ups that give players special abilities once picked up, such as candy that increases a bubble's distance, allows it to fly faster, or allows players to blow bubbles at a faster rate.

Occasionally, there are special elemental bubbles (either fire, water, or lightning) that appear and can be used to attack enemies. Additionally, there are bubbles with letters that spell out the word "EXTEND." If a player manages to spell out EXTEND, they will be granted an extra life and skip a level.

If a player touches an enemy or their projectile, they will lose a life. When an enemy is trapped in a bubble for too long, they will turn "angry" (as indicated by the enemy turning pink and moving faster) when they escape or when players take too much time to clear a level. Unless there is one enemy left, all enemies go back to normal when a life is lost.

Additionally, an invincible ghost will appear and endlessly chase the player until they complete the level or it touches them.

At Level 100, players fight a boss. If the player completes the game by themselves, the game will reveal a message that says "Come here with your friend." In multiplayer, brothers Bubby and Bobby return to their normal selves and are reunited with their girlfriends. There is also a code that unlocks a "Super" mode, where the enemies move faster and gameplay is harder. Clearing this mode with both players reveals the second ending, where the boss Super Drunk is revealed to be Bubby and Bobby's parents controlled by an unknown influence. The brothers then reunite with both their parents and their girlfriends.

Development[]

Originally developed for arcades, Bubble Bobble was later ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System, retaining the arcade's gameplay and introducing passwords where players can either enter cheat codes or return to the stage they were on.

Reception[]

AllGame gave the NES version of Bubble Bobble 4.5 stars out of 5.
