Brigandine: The Legend of Runersia is grand strategy game that released on the Nintendo Switch in June 2020. It is a successor to the original Brigandine that released in 1998. This new iteration was developed by Matrix Software and published by Happinet.

Gameplay[]

The game is a mix of a grand strategy game and a tactical role-playing game in that the player controls one of the six kingdoms battling for control of the land using troops to take control of the enemy castles while defending their own. Each troop consists of a Rune Knight leading a group of monsters. There are over 100 different Rune Knights with each nation getting their own ruler Rune Knight. Rune Knights can get stronger by inflicting damage on enemies to gain experience.

The game is played in two phases: Organization and Attack. Organization is when the player composes and moves the troops and whether to send idle Rune Knights on quests to collect items. The Attack Phase is the turn-based battles. When both phases are completed, the next nation goes in sequence with all six nations gone acting as a season. A single year is made up of 24 seasons with the difficulty settings determining how many years can pass before the end of the game. The easiest difficulty has no limit while the hardest is capped at 60 seasons.

When confronting enemies troops, the player engages in turn-based battles with Rune Knights and the monsters under their command. To successful take control of a castle, the player must either defeat all the enemy Rune Knights or get them to retreat. Defeated Rune Knights must take turns and mana to recover while defeated monsters are killed. if the ruler is defeated, all other troops must retreat regardless of their condition.

The game features two modes. The Main Mode is a story-based campaign for each of the nations while Challenge Mode is akin to a sandbox mode where the player can compose a customized army by choosing a nation and 9 additional Rune Knights that the player has recruited in the Main Mode. Challenge Mode also scores the player at the end.
