Battletoads is a video game released on the NES that was developed by Rare and published by Tradewest in order to compete with the ultra popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games. It was released on a variety of other, non-Nintendo consoles as well, though was remade for the Game Boy. It is to this day considered one of the most graphically enhanced video games released for the console.

Gameplay

Battletoads is oftentimes considered one of the hardest video games of all time. Few have ever completed the game without a Game Genie, and because of its difficulty it has become increasingly popular over the years (see: popularity). The game is a beat 'em up in a similar vein to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (purposefully). In it the character will mash the buttons in order to fight the opposing forces.

Popularity

The game is popular largely due to its difficulty. In recent years, however, it became an internet phenomenon after an anonymous member on image board 4chan posted an image of a game and asked "is this Battletoads", after which another member posted, falsely, "no, it's Doom III". Following this it became an internet meme and currently it is common for members of the site to request the other members to call GameStop or GAME and ask whether or not they have Battletoads.

Trivia

  • Battletoads was featured on the cover of Nintendo Power V25, with nearly 40 pages of the issue's contents having covered the game.
  • The NES version of Battletoads won 5 awards in the 1991 Nintendo Power Awards: Best Graphics and Sound (NES), Best Theme and Fun (NES), Best Play Control (NES), Best Multi-Player or Simultaneous, and Best Overall NES Game. The Game Boy version didn't win anything.
