Traitor to the Goddess
Please note that this story contains spoilers for the "Faith Forsaken (Part Two)" event.
Syndicate Soldier: Who ARE you people?!
Basileus: We are apostles: the executors of Ilia's will.
Syndicate Soldier: You're apostles?!
Syndicate Soldier: I'd heard tales about some kind of secret society from the Northern Church, but I never thought you were REAL!
Nevin: You know us? Aw, I'm honored.
Faris: But I think it's high time you told us everything ELSE you know...
Ryszarda: Ready yourself!
Basileus: We are apostles, one hand of the Goddess, and we shall administer Her authority!
Faris: I can't believe he got full marks—again!
Pinon: Welcome back, all! It sounds like you all had a fine time out there.
Nevin: We sure did. In fact, we were just talking about yesterday's mission.
Pinon: The one where you went to infiltrate a secret society with Basileus?
Faris: Yes. It turns out they're a shady group that's trying to create artificial humans.
Pinon: I heard members of the Church may have been involved as well?
Ryszarda: Indeed there were. And given the size of the group and the danger they posed, we moved to learn as much as we could about them and take them out.
Pinon: So I heard. But as I was deemed unready for such a mission, hearing was all I did.
Pinon: But tell me, what happened out there? You couldn't have failed, right?
Nevin: Quite the opposite—we got the info and then blew the doors off the place both figuratively and literally.
Pinon: Huzzah! I knew you could do it!
Pinon: Er, but then why is Faris so upset?
Faris: I'm not upset.
Ryszarda: He's just annoyed at the difference in skill between himself and Basileus—even though he handled himself brilliantly.
Faris: I don't need your pity!
Nevin: No need to put on a tough act just 'cause the rookie's here. But if it makes you feel better, you ain't the only one who feels about two inches tall around Basileus.
Pinon: Wait. YOU feel like that, Nevin?!
Nevin: Basileus is the big leagues, kid. Even Papa Bear's gotta look up to him.
Ryszarda: Little wonder he's our leader.
Pinon: He's even greater than I thought...
Pinon: I mean, I'd heard all kinds of tales about his skill, but as I have never interacted with the man, I was unsure how much stock to put in them.
Pinon: But I think all of you are incredible, so if you hold him in such high esteem, he must be even better than I thought!
Nevin: If you really want to know, you can get your info from the horse's mouth. Here he is now.
Pinon: Bwuh?!
Pinon: Thank you for your fine work, Basileus!
Pinon: I am beyond honored to meet you! I mean, it's all so sudden, so I'm not sure I'm ready, but, um...
Basileus: You are Pinon, yes? In what way do you not feel yourself to be ready?
Nevin: She's an admirer of yours, big guy. It's making me kiiinda jealous...
Pinon: It's just that I have looked up to you and your accomplishments for some time now.
Pinon: So, um, if you're willing, might you perhaps teach me how to prepare for missions? Or maybe combat techniques? Or just whatever you feel like doing!
Basileus: I appreciate the enthusiasm, but I fear there is nothing you can learn from me.
Pinon: What?!
Basileus: I don't know what you may have heard about me, but my way of doing things comes from experience alone.
Basileus: So even if I taught you, you couldn't put it to any kind of practical use.
Pinon: But...
Basileus: My apologies. Now, may I see you for a moment, Nevin? I need to ask you your thoughts on something that happened during yesterday's mission.
Nevin: Sure thing.
Ryszarda: Don't worry about that too much, Pinon; he's not exactly the warmest guy in the room. Also, he's like that with everyone, so you shouldn't—
Pinon: He...is...AMAZING!
Faris: ...What.
Pinon: He's so modest that he won't show off his own strength. And he's so stoic that he refuses to join in on small talk!
Pinon: I see now why he leads the apostles, but I must learn how he got that way...
Pinon: And I have to know more about HIM!
A few weeks later...
Nevin: So you tried looking into Basileus and didn't learn a thing, eh?
Pinon: Sadly, no.
Ryszarda: There's no need to be so down, Pinon!
Pinon: His defenses are simply too good! Anytime I even call out to the man, he slips away before I know it.
Pinon: And in all the reports I read, he's always throwing everything he has into every mission. How did he ever get to be so darn strong?!
Basileus: I am honored you would look into me with such fervor.
Faris: Looks like he heard everything you just said about your stalkerish behavior.
Pinon: Nooo! I wasn't trying to be a stalker! I'm so sorry, Basileus!
Basileus: Despite the high esteem you hold me in, I am really not so amazing as all that.
Basileus: I have experience—that's all. And if you keep going on missions, someday you will possess such experience for yourself.
Pinon: No! You're selling yourself short! You're the leader of the apostles! You're their very best! You're INCREDIBLE!
Pinon: You're smart, strong, brave, and a man of impeccable character!
Pinon: You don't constantly slack off, and you don't try to assign people points! There is no one I'd rather look up to!
Nevin: So I'm a slacker, eh?
Faris: I'm deducting all of your points.
Pinon: What?! I mean, no! You've got it all wrong! I wasn't talking about YOU people, I was talking about...um...OTHER people!
Basileus: Your worldview is still so narrow, Pinon.
Basileus: Although your constant following me HAS made you slightly better at hiding your presence.
Basileus: Still, there remains room for improvement. Keep working at it.
Pinon: Oh...he knew what I was doing even before he overheard me here. And I thought I'd been doing a good job being sneaky...
Pinon: Ugh. This is so embarrassing. I just want to dig a hole and then crawl in the hole and then pull the dirt back over the hole so I can die there.
Nevin: Don't sweat it, kid. Like Ryszarda said, he's like that to everybody.
Faris: Every time I see how skilled he is, I can't help but realize just how terrifying he would be as an enemy.
Ryszarda: I'm glad he's on our side.
Pinon: He truly is incredible...
Pinon: Will I ever reach that level?
Graht: What is our status, Basileus?
Basileus: Our preparations for Satan's resurrection are coming along nicely.
Graht: Excellent. I leave the rest to you.
Basileus: (No one should look up to someone like me.)
Basileus: I'm sorry, Pinon.
Basileus: (But there is something I wish to achieve above all else...)
Basileus: This is for her sake, too, and I WILL see it done.
