Aniplex Inc. is a Japanese subsidiary of Sony Music. It is primarily related to the publishing of Japanese music and anime series. In recent years, Aniplex has got in the game publishing business, released tie-ins to their anime franchises and Japanese indie games.
History[]
Aniplex was original established as a joint venture between Sony Pictures and Sony Music as Sony Pictures Entertainment Visual Works Inc. in 1995. It was eventually absorbed wholly by Sony Music and became Aniplex in 2003. In 2005, they established their Western subsidiary, Aniplex of America and their own animation studio, A-1 Pictures.
Aniplex later expanded in the 2010s to incorporate anime distributor, managing Wakanim, Funimation and later Crunchyroll. In 2020, Aniplex announced they would properly get into console game publishing, starting with Everyday Today’s Menu for the Emiya Family, a cooking simulation game for Switch. In 2021, they acquired the mobile game studio, DelightWorks, which also produced Type-Moon's fighting game, Melty Blood. Sometime in 2021, Aniplex absorbed the remnants of Unties, a Sony Music brand that published indie games.
