Ancient Robots are a race of mechanical sentient beings that existed in the distant past of Hyrule. The robots were powered by Timeshift Stones found in the Lanayru Desert, which is the reason why they have almost completely stopped working by the time of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
History[]
Thousands of years before Skyward Sword when the Lanayru Desert was still a lush green landscape, the Ancient Robots were performing various mining tasks. They also seemed to have a link with the Goddess Hylia and her regional servant, the thunder dragon Lanayru. The Ancient Robots were depicted as standing by Hylia's side during the war against Demise, they respect and even seem to work under Lanayru, and they were tasked with protecting one of the Sacred Flames.
Eventually, ressources started to be depleted and the land withered along with it. The Robots all almost all started to break down and by the time Link reach the now desertic landscape, only their corpses and a few Timeshift Stones remain. Link then discover that he can hit the Timeshift Stones to force a small area to travel back in time thus allowing him to interact with some of the Ancient Robots who have been dead for centuries.
Link is notably able to save an Ancient Robot from Technoblins thus obtaining an upgrade to his Beetle. Link also finds LD-301N Skipper and is able to use his boat in order to search for and find Skipper's Sandship and retakes it from rogue combat focused Ancient Robots. In doing so, Link is able to claims the power of Nayru's Flame. Link faces his last Ancient Robot in the Sky Keep, in the person of LD-003D Dreadfuse, who is one of the few Ancient Robot to have survived to the time of Skyward Sword without the use of a Timeshift Stone.
Another who survived is Scrapper who was mainted by Gondo's family since at least his grandfather's time. Scrapper is said to run on an Ancient Flower instead of Timeshift Stones according to Gondo himself. It is assumed that the Ancient Robots and their ruins faded into nothingness not long after the events of Skyward Sword as they were all pretty much dead by that point.
Types[]
LD-002S Scervo, a more combat focused unit.
The main type of Ancient Robots are the mass-produced LD-301 Series. They don't have name except for Skipper who was designed to carry out a specific task for Hylia and Scrapper. Most members of this series are mining robots, except for Skipper and his crew who were made to opperate a ship. Scrapper is heavily modified to be able to fly and retrieve objects from beneath the surface.
LD-002S Scervo and LD-003D Dreadfuse are part of the LD-002 and LD-003 Series, respectively. They are units who seem to have been designed to be combat capable. Scervo is a rogue unit who turned to the life of a pirate, took over Skipper's ship and took hostage his crew for millenia. Dreadfuse lives in the Sky Keep of Skyloft and it is unclear if he is an enemy or one of the trial left behind by the Goddess to test the hero.
