Development[]
Adventure Island II was developed by Now Production and published by Hudson Soft, released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1991. Building on the success of the original Adventure Island, the development team aimed to refine the gameplay and expand its variety. One of the most significant additions was the introduction of dinosaur companions, each with unique abilities—such as flying or swimming—which added strategic depth and variety to the platforming. Unlike the original game, which was based on Sega’s Wonder Boy, Adventure Island II was built from the ground up as an independent title, giving the developers more creative freedom. The world map and stage selection were also new features, allowing players to progress through themed islands and replay levels. The development team improved sprite work, controls, and level design to make the gameplay smoother and more balanced. These enhancements were well-received, helping to solidify Adventure Island II as one of the best entries in the series and a standout NES platformer.
