First off, it was the year when the Nintendo 64 was released, along with launch games Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64. It also was the year when many other notable games came out such as Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. 1996 also marked the debut of the Pokémon franchise with its first two games released in Japan (over two years before they would be released in North America).
