Disney Interactive Studios es una división de The Walt Disney Company que publica videojuegos basados en franquicias de Disney y conceptos originales que pueden convertirse en franquicias propias. Hay varias compañías afiliadas que desarrollan juegos para Disney Interactive Studios, entre ellas: Avalanche Software, Fall Line Studio, Propaganda Games, Black Rock Studio, Wideload Games Inc. y Junction Point Studios.
Disney Interactive Studios también licencia sus personajes y propiedades a otras editoriales, como THQ para sus juegos de Disney/Pixar y Square Enix para sus juegos de Kingdom Hearts. Con la compra de LucasArts por la empresa matriz Disney en 2013, Disney Interactive Studios ahora tiene los derechos para crear juegos basados en las franquicias de Indiana Jones y Star Wars.
Historia[]
Disney estableció Walt Disney Computer Software, Inc., su propia unidad de juegos interna, que se incorporó en 1988. WDCS generalmente utilizaba estudios de desarrollo de terceros para diseñar juegos derivados utilizando su repertorio de personajes existente. WDCS tuvo poco éxito atribuido por los altos ejecutivos de Disney debido a la baja calidad del producto y la falta de comprensión de las diferencias entre películas y juegos.
Disney Interactive fue establecida en 1996 una continuación de la división de software anterior, que se cerró en 1996 debido a una reorganización interna.
Alrededor de 2003, la compañía se renombró como Buena Vista Games, Inc. con dos etiquetas editoriales: Buena Vista Interactive para títulos multiplataforma de alto perfil y Disney Interactive para software infantil y de entretenimiento. Las marcas no siempre se usaron de manera concluyente. Algunos juegos se comercializaron como Buena Vista Games sin mencionar ninguna de las dos marcas.
El 10 de mayo de 2016, junto con el cierre propuesto del estudio de desarrollo Avalanche Software, la interrupción de la producción de la franquicia Disney Infinity y el anuncio de una pérdida de $147 millones para la división interactiva, Disney anunció que dejaría de publicar juegos. Los futuros juegos de Disney se lanzaron a partir de entonces como productos con licencia desarrollados y publicados por otras compañías.
